California’s Climate Plan Calls for No New Gas-Burning Power Plants

California regulators announced initiatives Wednesday to speed up the state’s clean-energy transition by cutting demand for fossil fuels by the end of the decade, including ending the construction of new gas-burning power plants — moves that would help combat climate change but could put the state at higher risk of power blackouts.

While it does not have the force of a legal ban on new gas power plants, its approval would make clear to other state agencies, including the California Public Utilities Commission, the state’s current policy.

“The climate is changing before our eyes. We need to take action to reduce the worst impacts of a changing climate and there is only one way to do that, break forever our dependence on fossil fuels,” said Liane Randolph, chair of the air board. Yet she cautioned that reaching the state’s targets would be a challenge. The plan “calls for a build-out of renewable energy resources at a rate we have never seen before in this state,” she said.
Gov. Gavin Newsom praised the proposal. “It’s the most ambitious set of climate goals of any jurisdiction in the world, and if adopted, it’ll spur an economic transformation akin to the industrial revolution,” he said in a statement following the plan’s release.
quote:
Though an earlier proposal would have allowed the state to expand its use of gas, regulators said they ultimately struck this part at the urging of climate advocates speaking on behalf of disadvantaged neighborhoods near oil refineries and gas plants.
California’s aspirations of transitioning rapidly to clean energy have been frustrated by the continuing threat of rolling blackouts, especially on hot summer nights when air conditioners are buzzing and the state can’t tap power from solar farms. To keep power flowing, the state has added giant new battery systems that can store the extra energy produced by solar panels during the day.

In addition, clean-air regulators in September announced a ban on new sales of natural gas heaters, water heaters and furnaces by 2030.
quote:
“The backbone of this transition is going to be having a clean grid,” said Rajinder Sahota, the board’s deputy executive director for climate change and research. Powering millions of cars, trucks and home appliances with electricity will require the state to nearly double its existing electricity generation and quadruple wind and solar power, she said.

All the potentially economical hydrocarbons still within California's borders, but let's go with this stupidity.

What are the consequences if they don't hit that target?

I don't live there, let it happen.
Will be glorious.

good for cali. they need this. Industry has left. Tax bases are vanishing.
so simple even a liberal arts major can support

Cali will be Progtopia.

Lets keep killing birds with windmills, damaging the ecosystem by inhibiting plant growth with solar panel farms, and keep on using petroleum to lubricate and mine and transport this ‘clean energy’.

We'll be plowing with mules pretty soon.
Forward to the past.

They won't be able to power 1/10 of their state or worse. Imagine being so stupid that you think a climate emergency is more important than being able to supply power to your people.

We should bring Enron back from the ashes to frick them over some more.

This shite is gonna be fun to watch.

California legislation is a real life 1980’s SNL skit.

The sad part is that there are millions of people who believe this

They were banking on Beto getting elected in Texas so that they could send more Texas energy to California. They're going to bankrupt themselves chasing a vanity project.

What do you think these green energy companies are?

The worst part of this is knowing more leftist kooks who can't figure out why the power keeps going off will flee to other states, thus infecting them forever.

Good luck with the rolling blackouts and politicians throttling your available power usage in the summer
What a dump
What a dump

So, they'll go all nuclear.
Right?
It would be a good idea.
That's the plan.

just not in their backyard
they'll just end up buying power from plants in Arizona and Nevada, sucking power from them like a leech
eta:
then transferring the higher cost to the people, like it always happens in the most expensive state in the country
if i'm a utility im looking HARD at building a plant near the border with California and selling the power to them at a PREMIUM

Energy policy equivalent of shoving your 2 year old in the pool because you want them to swim.

They seriously think some windmills and solar panels will quickly replace fossil fuels? LOL
The smart thing to do right now is add these renewable resources as supplemental to the grid and slowly wean off of fossil fuels as tech and mfg evolves over the next 25-50 years.
