There is a difference between a deadbeat dad and a dad getting fricked by the system.

He should pay what he owes plus interest and legal fees. Quite a bit of compounding happens over 40 years. I don’t feel sorry for anyone (man or woman) who runs out on his kids.

what's pathetic is the family court system, many spousal/child support rulings are set up to where it's impossible for the dad to comply, and the financial stipulations are ruled based on the man's gross income, as if he has no taxes to pay, and no expenses of his own, definitely long overdue for reform

At one point i was paying over 3k a month in cali... im no ot baller either.
I was making 250k in Afghanistan when she filed so my child support was based on that number. I moved home due to the divorce and custody, got a normal 85k job so i wouldnt get a family abandonment "penalty."
My US based job take home was something like 4700 a month i think, with a child support obligation over 3k... took 18 month to get amount lowered to $981 a month which i pay now but i did fall like 20k behind on my court ordered payment.
There are millions of dads getting fricked like this and we certainly arent deadbeats.

that's another major flaw in the system, the ruling is based on income at the time, and as you've experienced, when the income changes, for better or for worse, you're still on the hook for the figure, it takes forever to get back in front of the judge(and additional attorney fees to boot,) the judge is reluctant to adjust unless you can convince them that the change in income is permanent, and the judge will very rarely if ever, make an adjustment for the time period that you've paid the original amount of child support based on the original income during the time that your income was greatly reduced

I would think that would have been seized upon by an athlete’s lawyer 6 now.
Wonder why ex NFL players like Travis Henry go to jail for slinging dope? Because they have 15 kids and their child support is based off their NFL contract money which isn’t sustainable.

forgot to mention the flip side of my comment, let's say your income increases substantially post support ruling, the original support figure is now no longer enough, the ex can drag your arse back into court(more attorney fees,) and get more, it's a vicious and flawed(biased toward the one in possession of a penis,) system

Couldnt you tell if someone was a deadbeat before having sex with them? It takes about a week to know if someone is a deadbeat.

Let this be a warning to the youngsters out there. Make sure you procreate with people from good families. I can’t imagine a scenario where my husband would abandon his kids, but if he did, I would go to his parents and say, “Look what your son is doing.” They would lean on him until he did the right thing. My parents would do the same to me if the situation were reversed.
