Deadbeat dads might want to pay attention...
quote:

A North San Diego County woman was awarded child support from her ex-husband nearly 50 years after she says he left her with a young daughter.
quote:

Toni Anderson makes no apologies for going after the man she calls her "deadbeat ex" for having her raise their 3-year-old daughter on her own. Anderson says her ex-husband chose to go to Canada rather than pay court-ordered child support in the early 1970s. "I kind of put it on the back burner and just kind of forgot about it over the years," said Anderson. She supported her daughter while working as an interior designer in Los Angeles at a firm her daughter now runs.
quote:

Anderson admits she rents her part of the house. And now that she's retired, money is tight. Then it dawned on her. "I realized in the middle of the night one night last year, 'Hey, there's no statute of limitations on child support."
quote:

Anderson looked up old court papers and last month notified her ex-husband, who's now living in Oregon: she wanted him to pay up. But the amount she was seeking now was way beyond what he was asked to pay nearly a half-century ago. "He was only supposed to give me like a 160 dollars a month. Well, that was 50 years ago. That today is a lot more money."
quote:

With accrued interest of 10 percent a year, what would have been a total payment of some $30,000 is now more than $170,000.
quote:

Along with getting what she's due, Anderson wants to spread the word to other single parents in California: You can still collect. And to those who skipped out, her message is for them to watch out.
quote:

Toni Anderson's lawyer, Sara Yunus, Esq., an Associate Attorney for Antonyan Miranda, LLP, tells 10News a private hearing in Vista Court Wednesday resulted in a settlement of $150,000.

He should have paid but she's probably just as bad. Money is tight so one night she starts thinking about who she can sue.

I remember a case back in the 1990s where a deadbeat got caught long after pulling something like this. He moved across the country and used a fake identity.

Karma came in the form of him being in his early 60s when he got caught....and he paid all his Social Security taxes into the account of the guy whose number he stole.

Of course but there are definitely some deadbeats out there who won't pay because they don't think they should. It's pathetic.

Yeah looks like he's heading back to canada.

This kind of thing is the kind of thing that can break some of these stupid scenarios if appealed. I get a fine, but not this much.

This isnt child support. And who just randomly "remembers" there is no statue of limitations on child support??

Probably because the courts are so skewed towards the mother. I know guys who have to pay over half their paycheck and live paycheck to paycheck while the woman is taken care of by her new boyfriend. They don't get married because the child support would go down. It's honestly a bullshite system.

This guy is a deadbeat but she clearly made it. This dude will have to barely scrape by now if he even survives this.

Imagine if she could have put money back for retirement instead of pulling all of the financial weight for her daughter. Historical return on the stock market is 7%. His penalty was 10%. In my view, that’s a 3% additional tax for being a piece of shite.

I agree, but the system in this country is heavily slanted against men. Some get raw deals.

what's pathetic is the family court system, many spousal/child support rulings are set up to where it's impossible for the dad to comply, and the financial stipulations are ruled based on the man's gross income, as if he has no taxes to pay, and no expenses of his own, definitely long overdue for reform

You’d be surprised in California.

I have a cousin whose husband abandoned her and her kids and who had little to no contact with them for about 20-30 years. When he died, his new wife sued my cousin for equity out of her house in the Valley because of the portion he paid in before abandoning her.

In hindsight, maybe she should have countersued for child support on two kids to offset the amount she ended up having to pay.

There are some out there like you are talking about but the majority I have seen don't fall into that category. I think this is a little frivolous but if he would have paid, this wouldn't have happened...

Yet they don’t wrap it up because they can’t feel anything.

They’re sure feeling that child support coming out of their check.
