I'd like to keep this on the OT instead of the PoliBoard if possible.

quote:

The "death with dignity" movement marked a victory in California Friday when the state Senate passed a bill allowing terminally ill patients to end their own lives with the help of a physician.

The End of Life Option Act, which passed in the state Assembly Wednesday, would allow patients to seek aid-in-dying options so long as they are given six months or less to live by two doctors, submit a written request and two oral requests at least 15 days apart and possess the mental capacity to make their own health care decisions.

Gov. Jerry Brown (D), who attended a Jesuit seminary prior to his political career, has yet to indicate whether he will sign the bill into law.

Keep in mind, this option is heavily restricted.

I have yet to hear a rational argument against Right to Die. Oregon is probably the most well known state that has this law, but Washington and a couple others have it as well. It is a good option for someone to have.

I support it. People should be able to choose. Especially if sick.

Youd maybe have less extravagant suicides that effect the public.

Agreed. I get frustrated at the religious arguments against it.

As long as it is the person's choice, I don't have an issue with it. I've seen what advanced cancer does to a person, and while everyone clings to the statistical outliers, it's brutal.

I haven't put to much thought into it, but I can see it's benifits. I'm sure there are some ways it could be abused as well. To sum up I have no opinion yet, need to research it more.

This.

If you've ever been in the position to have a family member experiencing horrible pain with absolutely no hope of recovery and they have a desire to call it a day and they physically can't, you have no question this ought to be obvious. Very few things piss me off more than having an able bodied do-gooder tell someone who is suffering they need to endure it because of some belief system they have that tells them they need to interfere.

If I had a superpower, the ability to reverse the fortunes of those assholes with those who they tell how to live would be what I'd want first.

It should be allowed but require checks to ensure sound minds of people wanting to do it. Manipulative family try to take advantage of the elderly for monetary gain all the time and this would be no different.
But, death used to be an honorable thing in certain situations. This needs to be allowed.

And the law would make it a felony to coerce people into taking this option. I know, I know...the law doesn't always work, but the check is there legally.

their own or another

on what basis do you support the notion that any life, yours included, is worth protecting under law?

Some people are physically incapable of committing suicide. Tough shite for them because they are actually worse off...?

It's very easy to "kill yourself" and stay with in the rules of morality and causation . I like the idea.

If you're in pain, keep upping the pain meds until a lethal dose is reached. Then, in the end, you did not commit suicide . You were simply trying to control the pain and ended up passing away.

Morphine -> Opium -> Cocane -> Heroine . By the time you get to Heroine to control pain, you'd be a gonner anyway.

It's their life, not ours. I would want that option if I was in their situation. Although I don't know if I would want to or not.
