Those order kiosks were coming regardless of if they got a higher minimum wage or not. They've been slowly installing them for a few years now.

Before the law could take effect, the fast food industry gathered enough signatures to qualify a referendum on the law in the November 2024 election. That meant the law would be on hold until voters could decide whether to overturn it. Furious, labor unions sponsored legislation this year that would have made fast food companies like McDonald’s liable for any misdeeds of their mostly independent franchise operators in the state. Democratic lawmakers also restored funding to the Industrial Welfare Commission, a long-dormant state agency that has the power to set wage and workplace standards for multiple industries. Both of those moves alarmed the business groups. All sides began working on a compromise over the summer. In exchange for a $20 minimum wage, labor unions have withdrawn their legislation to make fast food companies liable for their franchise operators’ labor violations and lawmakers have stripped funding for the Industrial Welfare Commission.

You left out the most important part of this article, on purpose. Who gives a shite if someone makes 20$/hr? Good for them.

Ingrid Vilorio, a fast-food worker at a Jack In The Box in the San Francisco Bay Area, said the increase in salary next year will bring some relief to her family, who until recently was sharing a house with two other families to afford rent.

Ingrid, just wait until Jack In The Box lets you go next year because they can't afford to keep the number of staff they currently have.

Oh, and THIS...lulz:

you think they will just adjust to having higher labor costs without passing it along to the consumer?

Nothing wrong with this... They have such a high level of inflation in Cali that a higher income standard is necessary. The problem is that they will try to apply the same standard in places with lower cost of living.

McDonald's budget for worker-less kiosk development just increased.
Government idiots like Newsome don't understand that businesses must pay attention to all of their costs, labor included.
If the company can find a way to eliminate a worker, they will do it.
And now, with added wage increase, that payback period for a $50,000 kiosk just got chiseled by a few months.
Win for the kiosk developers, loss for the employees, neutral for the company

Why stop at $20? Make it $50 an hour.

I have some friends in Cali. Can't wait to hear the stories of their $40 McDonald combo meals.

Price hikes, staffing cuts, automation to replace unskilled labor, etc. that’s what these increased minimum wage jobs cause. It ends up hurting the people it intended to help.

It’s a minimum wage job, not a career.

The scary part...is they do understand it, but they cater to the lowest denominator as they are currently the voting majority.

If one was so willing to do, it would be interesting to see exactly who some of these investors are of these companies and who they do/don't have connections to.

There's a reason why lifelong politicians on government salaries wind-up becoming multi-millionaires, and it ain't by accident.

That would be great. If the unskilled folk are making 50$/hr. My skilled labor should be 5x that. Thanks.

Oh look, more ignorance. You think this stops with Fast food?

I’d bet my house I’m in better shape than you, but I can tell you don’t have a pot to piss in. You definitely don’t employ anyone

The robots are coming, run for the hills!! You’re a fatalist, good for you. Quality of workers at 20$/hr will be better than some jerkoff that doesn’t give a frick, to begin.
