The money is in the privately owned work releases next to the jails with the pole barns and welding shops next door where they are getting labor with pennies on a dollar. These sheriff's brother in laws are making out like fat cats.

So he's cool with releasing the bad ones, but wants to keep Durfresne there to do his taxes. Now that's a guy who'd get down with slavery

Prison privatization is one of the biggest mistakes we've ever made. There's a reason we have more people in prison than any other country. More prisoners means more money

What an idiot, I mean, on so many levels. This is a national story BTW.

They are interrelated issues in my opinion. One contributes to the other

There is a huge difference between trustees and work release. I’m going out on a limb and assume the sheriff is talking about when you release the TRUSTEES that the state/parish will then have to hire private contractors to perform the work. The will offset the savings by releasing them.

So why did you call this institutional racism?
because the american justice system has been doing this shite and far, far, far worse to black people since the emancipation.
now, it's more egalitarian and some whites get caught up and that's terrible. but it didn't start out that way. only white folks in the south who got done like that had done something really bad.

This is a prime example of institutional racism (or even classism), and if you can't see it, you're blind.
That's the problem. Many of us see the issues as classism or socioeconomic issues, but you can never get a poc to even entertain that possibility. Further, most people do not have the capacity to view issues objectively, so it makes these discussions very difficult. As long as each group waves their victim cards while screaming about all the prejudice they constantly face, but never give any specifics or supporting evidence of that prejudice, the masses will not support their cause.
The same things that black folks are griping about also happen to poor people of every race.

Now, but it originated with blacks.
