I'm not calling it slave labor. But you are right, keeping a prisoner isn't free, which is why we should be releasing the "good ones" that have earned their way out with good behavior.

I heard about this on 710 keel yesterday. This was a 20 minute speech cut down to ~19 seconds.
I'm not agreeing with the 19 seconds I saw and I haven't seen the whole thing but i think it would behoove people to spend the 20 minutes and watch the whole thing.
I can cut 19 seconds out of 20 min anyone says and make them seem like an a-hole.

Work release inmates work for private companies and do get paid but they are charged room and board/transportation and other fees which are taken out of their check before they get anything.

State pays about $24 a day for a DOC inmate, zero for parish inmates. It costs $50+ a day to house them. State is getting off cheap

That $24 per day adds up, I think the Caddo sheriff is slated to lose something like $1500 a day with these releases

you'd probably be better off doing time at Angola than the majority of our parish prisons. between budget cuts and sheriffs who don't give a shite, parish prisons are dangerous fricking places

And parish jails would be much better off if they'd only house parish inmates and make the DOC guys the state's problem. They aren't obligated to accept those.

The DOC/Sheriff's deal has been an absolute mess for everyone who isn't a sheriff

DOC would be bankrupt tomorrow if every sheriff said no more state inmates in my jail. Most Sheriff's aren't smart enough to figure out it's a horrible deal for them.

We have a 1983 against a private prison facility where a DOC guy stomped to death a city detainee (in for parking tickets) in front of a camera (wasnt being monitored) over about a 40 minute time span.
