Says the dumbass that's never used retreads but he's buying retreads for all of his vehicles because he's either a tightwad or just poor.

my son couldn't afford the cost of new tires for his CUCV and wanted aggressive tires to replace the dry-rotted ones the vehicle came with.

after 2 months of observing him and his tires, i decided to try them on my vehicle as well.

I ran "threadwright" LINK

for awhile on my truck. Very limited on sizes offered, but they held up and did perfectly fine. Can also request certain side walls and pick your tread pattern.

How many times have you driven down the highway and had to dodge the caps from retread tires?

What does that have to do with anything? That's a side effect of the physics at work with TTs.

In your magical world this would be solved if those bastards stopped buying recaps?

I don't have personal experience with retreads.

However, with the frequency of failures on new tires I would think the failure rate on retreads is significantly higher.

For me it wouldn't be worth the risk.

Rotate your tires every oil change and pay attention to pressures and you will dramatically extend the life of your tires.

Quite a bit of anecdotal evidence that retread failure is common and increases the number of road hazards on the highway.

Would the road be a safer place without those hazards? Absolutely.

Wow so you've solved the problem! If they bought new tires they wouldn't explode into pieces on the road.

blown out tires happen with TTs with same frequency regardless of the tire

Eta according to government the retreads actually hold up better than new

I used to do it when I lived in the Anchorage area, but no one around here has recaps. Never had an issue with them and saved a lot of money.

I used to commute 60 miles each way at that time as well. Recaps are safe if you find a reputable place to purchase and will do as well as new IMO. Only difference is you can also buy a new TV or camera lens with the money you save.

You do understand that the failure mode for even factory new 18-wheeler tires is exactly the same as the retreads right? Traditional 18-wheeler tires are still bias-ply and some are "regenerating" where they are designed in layers with newer tread under the old layer. More 18-wheelers are going to those wide single radial tires which don't shed the crown like bias-ply tires do when the wear out.

I work for a company who does retreads. We only cap medium truck tires though. The failure rate of retreads and new tires generally has to to with maintenance, application, and road conditions. A lot of people who buy recaps don't buy the correct tire/pattern for the correct application, or put it in the correct position. All those tire scraps that you see on the side of the road are not necessarily recaps. New tires shred and come apart the same way recaps will. They are also used a lot on dump trucks and haulers that go into waste sites or dirt/gravel pits. Those sites will tear up any tire, no matter the type. I don't know much about passenger/LT recaps though.

A lot of you all are not passing on correct information.

yep. i like them so far. checked out the operation a little more today when i was in there..they are going CRAZY with online orders since they put up a webpage. they are hustling getting tires to ship.

they aren't much from a 'retail' standpoint. just a couple of guys to take the order & pull from the inventory.

I buy tires off of Amazon.

Then I find someone to put them on the rims. In Baton Rouge I have used one of the gas stations north of LSU campus.

Then I take the car to Sam's and have them balanced for cheap.

Still saves money off of retail tire companies.
