yes, I put this on the travel board, but nobody goes there.
haven't purchased new luggage in 20 years. Best place to look and what brands to look at?

Save yourself the $$$. Buy a duffel bag. Only way I fly or otherwise travel.

Steamer trunks are making a comeback. Get some of those.

Screw paying a ton of money on luggage. Go to your nearest Marshalls and buy from there. You will save a ton of money

buy a cheap check bag you because airliners baggage handlers just destroy these things and a nice ‘Away’ carry on.

Go to ROSS or TJMaxx or someplace like that.
Can get luggage cheap there. My husband got a huge Samsonite suitcase at ROSS for $50.

I agree with this. My check bag is just a basic Samsonite.

Dudes here will tell you not to buy nice stuff because it could get scuffed or marked up with a lot of use. Which is an interesting argument if you try to apply it to other parts of life.
Don't get nice shoes because then you'll wear them and they could get worn out. Buy walmart shoes instead. Don't buy nice clothes because they could get messed up if you wear them. Don't get a nice car because it could get scratched. Buy a hooptie instead, you'll be better for it.
Also, don't get a good-looking wife. There's a chance she'll get ugly some day. Find yourself a nice, plump, ugly wife.
Or maybe just buy some nice luggage if you can afford it and want to look nice. If you don't care how it looks then just find the cheapest stuff out there. Nothing wrong with that.
Bric's makes nice stuff. So does Gherka. So does Coach. I have a Bric's 30" bag that I've taken all over the world and it still looks nice.

Look on Amazon at reviews and buy the highest rated that fits the size and style you are looking for.

The idea that it doesn't matter because it'll get damaged is a farce, IMO. And the only options aren't Briggs or Tumi or Rimowa, IMO. A lot of outdoorsy companies make hard use luggage that is very utilitarian in nature. Some people probably dislike the look, but for modern air travel, I don't really give a shite.
I've had the same Eagle Creek rolling bag for about 10 years, and my wife has been through about 3-4 bags in that time. I haven't had a single issue whatsoever. No wheel breakage despite miles over cobblestones, no tears, no zipper issues, etc. It's a beast, and it has a lifetime warranty anyway. I expect performance of Osprey and Mystery Ranch and whatnot are similar.
If you're going to be hard on rolling luggage, don't get 4 wheeled luggage, IMO.

This is true. I had a black, North Face Rolling Thunder 30" that I used for a few years. It wasn't particularly fashionable for the price but it was nice and built to last. I ended up giving it to my sister when I bought my Bric's 30".
Either way, there are a lot of nice, high-quality options depending on what kind of travel you're doing.

got a big Swissgear suitcase at Target for $70ish for a checked suitcase. Got an Osprey Farpoint 40 for carry-on, from amazon for $150ish. The Osprey is awesome, love it. The mickey mouse planes that fly out of BR makes you check hardside carry-ons under the plane. The Osprey looks like a soft side backpack, but has a metal frame and straps zip away. cram it overhead and dont have to wait around during a 40 minute layover in Atlanta for the guy under the plane to get my carry-on back up to me.
