or a Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland 2014 or newer).
Just picked up a 2016 Overland 4x4 and I love it. The interior is top notch IMO for a domestic.

It drives different because its a real SUV, body on frame and has good offroad capability. I dont know why people think it drives like a old pick up truck with a SFA and leaf springs in the back. Its not a plush Cadillac but its perfectly comfortable by any standard.
Perfectly comfortable and harsh compared to its competition aren't mutually exclusive.

I have had a 2015 GC Overland 4x4 for almost a year. I don't have any big complaints.

Grand Cherokees have a bad history of being unreliable. Have they improved in that realm?

I guess from the sound of my descriptions, I'm leaning away from an actual SUV. How many are left out there? Tahoe/Yukon, 4Runner, Wrangler? Maybe Grand Cherokee? Hard to tell these days between a crossover and an actual SUV.

If you HAVE to get a Jeep, look into the EcoDiesel 3.0L V6. Great motor made by Italian company VM Motori, and was used all over Europe in various vehicles starting in 2011. That means VM had 3 years to work out the kinks before we ever saw the engine starting in the 2014 model year in the Ram and the JGC. They seem to be very reliable motors, and the 25 mpg average in both city and highway driving is phenomenal for a full size SUV.
If I had to buy a Grand Cherokee, it would be a diesel or nothing. Just my 2 cents
Also the Grand Cherokee is unibody and always has been, instead of body-on-frame like a Tahoe or 4Runner.

At 5k for the upgrade, its wasn't worth it IMO.

What's your point? Diesel engine options in HD pickups are $8500-$10,100 depending on brand. They're expensive in general. Having a full size SUV with the capability to go 600+ miles on one tank and get 4-5 MPG better in both city and highway driving is worth the extra cost, IMO.
ETA not to mention that the power curve of a diesel motor, which is all low end torque, suits an SUV very well. It's very smooth and it's never hurting for passing power.

At 20mpg in a gasoline engine and 30mpg in a diesel and $3 gallon cost for both fuels, it would take you 100k miles to break even. It would be nice, but from a pure savings standpoint not worth it.
Also the 2014 diesels actually did have a lot of issues. I found several lemon law vehicles when looking at used.

say what you need it for.

Mostly City/Highway driving, with 2-3 long haul (5 hours) hunting trips per year.

It's a big stretch to say it's "harsh" compared to other vehicles. And the 4Runner has no true competition, all those other "SUVs" are closer to cars than to a 4Runner.

No it isn't.

Grand Cherokee is direct competition. Don't get me wrong, the 4Runner is one of the better SUVs you can buy. But it's not perfect, and it's not above criticism.

No true competition? Thats a bit of stretch, the GC is pretty capable off road and the interior doesn't look like shite.

Doesn't surprise me that there were issues with the 2014s. First year vehicles always have issues, even if it's just the first year of an engine in particular.
I will agree with you that the math doesn't favor the diesel, but someone's preference is a subjective thing, regardless of the math. I prefer the sound and the feel of a turbodiesel motor in general, across all types of vehicles. That, along with being able to go a little further between every trip to the gas station, is worth the extra $ to me, but that's just one man's opinion.

Bought my 2013 JGC Overland new and have 55k miles on it thus far with no problems at all. Very comfortable highway ride. Mine has the hemi v8 though FYI. My mom drove a 2011 model to 75k with no problems. I think they've improved reliability over older models
