Buying a used 3/4 ton diesel: what do I need to know?
Car is paid off and I need a truck to do work out at the farm, haul hunting stuff, tractor, etc.

Don’t wanna pay over 15k, so mileage will likely be high; but still needs to be reliable. Never owned a diesel before, so what do I need to know?

And when is Chicken gonna start an automotive forum?

You gotta have the wide arse mirrors and the 35" low profile tires. Oh, and all your suspension parts underneath need to be powdercoated in some neon color.

After the personals/hook up board, but maybe before the sports entertainment board

You would have better luck on OB. OTers that buy diesel pull a bay boat twice a year.

15k won't get you very far for a diesel. It will need to be pretty old/high miles.

EHHH while I loved them they are a bit old in the tooth and under-powered, the 7.3 may be running good but the rest of the truck will be falling apart, the last ones are 15 years old now.

I post plenty over there and I’ve never seen you contribute anything of value to any discussion on either board.

Who are you and why should your opinion matter to me at all?

I have a work vehicle so I went a got a 2013 Chevy with the 6.0 gas for exactly what you described. Decided to upgrade to a diesel for more towing ( based on the manufacturer recommended amounts) Got a 09 6.6 Duramax and really haven't seen a lot of difference in torque. I did end up having to spend more to delete it also.

So, don't count out that 6.0 gas burner but if you have to find a diesel in that price range id look at an 09-11 6.6 with around 150-200k miles.

First off, if you’re hauling tractors, get a 1 ton. The age and mileage you’ll be looking at, you won’t see a difference in price. Personally, I’d find a clean ‘99-‘03 7.3 liter with 250k miles or so and upgrade the turbo and injectors. If you find the right deal, you could be close to 15k and you’d have a 375 hp truck that runs as well as a new one, but without all the hassle of these newer diesels. The transmission would be on the clock, but once you eventually upgraded that you’d likely have a trouble free truck for 200k+ miles.

I’m no expert, but look at the early to mid 2000s Ford’s. Much more reliable engine (7.3) than what they have now with all of the eco crap.

Wouldn’t a Diesel engine run longer and get better mileage?
