It means POS or fricked up

Meh, never thought of owning a tux... I have a couple of nice suits but never bought a tux because I always figured it wasn't worth it. Now that I go to several events a year I figure I might as well buy a nice one around 400-600 bucks range.

Mine ftr is about $2500 with pants, jacket, shirt, and bow tie.
Spends $2,500 on a presumably nice, classic tuxedo.

The only times I wear tuxes are when I'm in a wedding party, with a specific style.

Every gentleman should own their own tailored tux.
I agree, but it chaps my arse every time I'm in a wedding where we're dressed like we're going to senior prom instead of a classic tux. I've got a $2,000 tailored tuxedo at home while I'm stuck in an awful $180 rental.

I recommend the link above for anyone trying to get it right.

Wait for a sale at Jos. A. Bank (lol jk) and get one there. You should be out the door for $300 with a shirt and accessories. Then get it tailored. It's the best of both worlds: you look way better than the shlubs in rental tuxes and you won't be too sad if you rip a sleeve off at 5 am at Snake & Jakes.

Good advice. Your first tux does not Need to break the bank.
But get nice shoes. They will outlast that first tux and wear well as you get older and fatter and need a new one.

Shirts are not an issue, I wouldn't mind a vest... not sure what the total cost would be for a jacket, vest, and pants but 400-600 should be ok

Not wearing a cumberbun or vest is actually "in" right now. So you're the one who doesn't know what the frick he's doing, it would seem.

You own a tuxedo shirt but don't own a tuxedo?
Personally, I prefer a covered button placket, but you can get the ones with stud holes as well.
It is very difficult to find a true tuxedo vest, which should not be visible in the chest when the tuxedo is buttoned, but they do exist.
A cummerbund that matches the bowtie is much more readily available, and make no mistake, a cummerbund on a well-tailored tuxedo is a very classy touch.
An exposed waist is an option, but considering it is more of a fad than the traditional styling, I'd recommend getting a long-term waist covering option.

a tuxedo style shirt? No, but nice dress shirts that could pass yes...

As a former tux owner, my advice is that if you're between your late twenties and early thirties and no major body size changes coming, a basic tux is a very worthwhile investment. You'll avoid outrageous rental fees, and also avoid dealing with the hassle of renting.
But stay with a basic tux, there's really not much reason to go beyond that.

How could they pass? Do they have stud holes? I'm not being obtuse on purpose.
Please don't be that guy wearing a nice white shirt with plastic white buttons instead of studs or a covered placed.

Then it isn't a traditional tuxedo. I posted a thread to the black tie guide website that I'd suggest reading.
If the jacket isn't is black/midnight blue, it isn't a tuxedo for a black tie affair. There are areas where you can express some individual taste, but for the most part a tuxedo is a very specific attire. Outside of the jacket color, a white shirt is probably the most steadfast part of the outfit.
