I bought a new vehicle Monday night in Mississippi and have to register it in Louisiana. The dealership said that they are going to reach out to a notary in Louisiana for me to go in and sign some paperwork to transfer it over. It was late and the finance manager wasn’t making any money off of me with the extra warranties, wheel protection, etc. so he was in a hurry to close everything out and get out of there. I was ready to get out as well. Is this normal or should the dealership have handled all of this paperwork for me and register the vehicle in Louisiana?

I've done the same in Texas twice. The dealer handled everything, tax, title, license paperwork. Everything came through the mail like if I had bought it in LA.

They can either estimate the taxes and you pay those at closing. Any discrepancies will be made up later. Or you can pay the taxes when you register the vehicle with the Louisiana DMV. Most dealerships will try to estimate the taxes and handle it all at closing.

Yes that’s correct. I purchased only one car out of state - Texas and they did all the pw.
I just had to pay the sales tax when I registered it in La

When I bought a new car in Mississippi, they did all the paperwork and collected the Sales Taxes.

Same thing when I bought two other vehicles in two other states.

A few weeks later, they let me know the DMV had my shite, and I just had to go there and get my registration and plate.

I think I paid about $40 out of pocket at the DMV.

Yeah, I paid all of the Louisiana taxes, but I thought it was odd that I will have to go to a notary to sign some paperwork.

Yeah seems completely lazy on their part. I bought in Texas and everything was handled by the dealer no issue.

I bought my last truck from a dealership in TX. I just paid for the truck, and they fedex'd me the title a few days later. Once I got the title, I registered it in LA and paid TTL

BIL just bought a Tesla. They had to pick it up I. Tennessee because the Texas and Mississippi dealers would not register it in Louisiana.

I’ve bought two vehicles from two different dealerships in Jackson and the dealer did all the paperwork and taxes. Didn’t have to pay anything extra and my plates came in the mail about a month later.

Buying a vehicle out of state:

1. Buy the vehicle and you pay no tax there
2. Seller sends you the title
3. When you go to register the vehicle at the DMV, you pay the Louisiana sales tax

Not rocket science

They have the option to offer the service to you, which they usually take and add a few fees in. If your bank is ok with them giving you all the paperwork to take to a notary/DMV in Louisiana.

Typically the bank requires the dealer to handle the paperwork to assure that the lien is properly assigned and you dont go and shred the UCC1 and title the car in your name with no lien holder.

If you paid cash you certainly have the option to get it all done yourself.

Sidenote: You owe NOTHING to the state in which you purchased the vehicle, just the state of registration, in case you were wondering.
