Pay w/ a check....

This, just consider this a lesson learned. Next time never take a check.
If you deposit the check, say no dice to return, shite can happen. Is it worth having head aches and possibly some dude harassing you???? NO

Thankfully we were successful last year in banning the use of checks within my master planned community. It took a joint effort between sheriff's office, HOA and financial safety task force (new unit put together by retired financial advisor who lives on hole #5)

You took the check because you kinda knew him and where he worked. How well did that reasoning work out for you?
There's your life lesson. Now that you have learned something from it, take your lumps and use your newfound knowledge in your next dealings.

I have no issue just keeping the money and letting him deal with his bad decision (this is all because his wife is pissed at him because they just installed a pool too).

or I can pay him $600 dollars and he'll take care of selling the bike????

I would tell him the price just went up $500 or you are reporting it as a theft.
Solved. Use your leverage.

I'm waiting until tomorrow to be sure. Sounds like the hold was too late. He already listed the item for sale on the same site he bought it from. I think he knows he's got nothing now. I would never think to get a bill of sale for a bike (that's what was sold). Bought and sold several when I was doing triathlons. I just keep coming back to the realization that people suck.
The dude probably figured out that he could go to Walmart and get a Huffy for less than $100.

Take item back, but charge a $1500 restocking fee.
Relist and sell item for $3000

This. I know a moron in jail right now on felony theft charges for selling his she'd for $3,000 to two people, getting their money, and not giving them the shed.

Possibly a felony beyond your civil remedy above.
That being said, I would offer to return it minus a jackhole fee for the stop pay stunt.

So the money is in my account, but Chase said that it'd be another day before they can 100% confirm that his bank isn't going to put a hold on it.
Just wait another day and if it goes through than just tell him to get over it. If it doesn’t then either swap the money for the bike or depending on what kind of person you are, call the police. I don’t do checks but had someone try and get a $550 refund or return, from a generator I sold on FB. He even said it worked great still, I knew he just needed it for a one week use at a camp. I just simply told him no and after a few pissed off messages from him, I sent him a pic of 2 dogs fricking and blocked him.

LOL this sort of philosophy, keep it real, don't take no shite, whatever you want to call it is going to cost you way more time, energy and bullshite than taking this thing back in real life.
You made a mistake, don't throw away more time and effort just cause you already did so once.

Have you gone to his bank and tried to cash the check?

Thats theft. Call the police.
About all you can do, honestly.
Its also a felony and could tack on a check fraud charge pretty easily.
