The problem is that the truck is worth about 7k less than the same '16 when it is bought.
But you can't buy the 16 for the same price as the 15.

If they would have gotten in the 44 to 45k range I would have bought it because I am going to beat it up and use it as a work truck anyway.
That's just asking too much. No one is going to sell you a truck at over $20k off the sticker. The $49k price you got is a very good one if they're still letting you have 0% for 72.
ETA: Dyslexia got me. Could have sworn your original post said $65k, not $56k. My bad

It really did USED to make sense.
No, but seriously, for all of American history, unless you wanted the aura or experience of new car ownership, it made more sense to buy a year or two used.
That's just a tough notion for people to shake because it was so true for so long that it has become ingrained in their thinking.
I have owned 5 different used pickups. I will not buy another used one in a year or two when my current truck is worn out. It no longer makes sense with used prices where they are. A used truck's value used to fall like a rock and if you weren't a fancy-pants who needed a new truck for your vanity, you could save a ton of money. That's not true anymore, even on high mileage vehicles. A couple year old truck is in some cases MORE used than the deal you can get on a new one because the new side of the operation needs to push tin off the lot. I refuse to buy a car from a private seller. I want the protection of having a dealership to come after if it is a flood vehicle or a lemon. Especially with flood vehicles EVERYWHERE right now.

I bought a 2015 sierra at the very end of last year and got $12K off of the MSRP. My buddy is about to get the 2016 sierra today the same grade of truck as mine and he is going to get $14k off. You have to take advantage of the good promotions.

Dang, dude. I thought $12K was about as good as you could get.

Nope. 4th of July Discount is 20% which is around 10.5K and the dealer discount is 3.5K.

MSRP on the one I am looking at is 56,500
MSRP is a fictitious number. Don't look at it at all.

Do you even math? 44 to 45k from 56k is the 10 to 12k range, not 20k. And for a truck about to be nearly 2 model years old, yeah, that should be reasonable.

But I can. The '16s that I looked at that were very similar with the same packages were hovering the 48 to 49k range before trade also. It is very easy to get them to that point by telling them you are shopping prices.
I have actually started leaning towards the XLT with the 302a package and vinyl flooring and 3.73 gears. I can get it for ~40k to 42k before trade and it is a really nice truck and eliminates carpet for me anyway.

You can if you shop and be patient.

True, I misread as a 16, I did not think any popular 15 trims would be left on the lots.

Sorry, read it as $65k. Yea, that price on a 15 is terrible. Would be a good price on a 16.

Does it matter? It will last, what? 5-6 years max and you'll need a new truck.

It is a waiting game, kinda.
You'll get a better discount the deeper in the model year you go, but selection gets pretty limited, in terms of options and colors.

Is this in Houston?

That does look like a good deal.

What can one realistically expect to pay for an F-150 lariat 4x4 crew cab these days?

Whichever you pick, lease it - the way trucks are right now you may have equity in your lease at the end of term

Neither. Get a real truck instead of a shitty ford

I would think a Lariat with the 501A would be around $41K and the 502A around $44K.
