Similar. You have the shitload of people who go to Burning Man, but you also have the regional groups who hold their own regional burns. In Dallas, they have Mysteria in October. The Austin group holds Flipside every spring during Memorial Day weekend. Up north, I've been to a couple of PEX (Philadelphia Experiment) events.

When these groups go to the big show (BM), yes, many build their own representative camp (or camps) and art objects. There's a whole evening dedicated to it, called C.O.R.E.

BTW, if you really want to see ultimate depravity and the very most fricked up shite you could imagine, go to an event called Disturbia, held during Halloween weekend every year. Those freaks are truly fricked in the head.

you seem to get around

I went to PEX when I lived in DC. I went to Flipside and Mysteria after I moved back to LA. My brother lives in Dallas and goes to these events all the time, so I have the connection.

There's a pretty big difference in the feel of an event that's organic and spontaneous, as opposed to one that is shaped (not to say manipulated) to seem that way. Planning is necessary either way, but if I understand you... it's becoming less the genuine cultural experience that it used to be, and more the grander, Disney/Vegas depiction of a cultural experience, full of tourists (vs more interesting natives).

I'm sure there's still some pockets of the real thing, interesting artists, etc. So, I'd probably still go if the opportunity ever works out... I'll just make sure to manage my expectations.

The "Dallas" event actually takes place in East Texas. It is Myschievia, not "Mysteria."

Which would NOT surprise me.

They may have gone underground to avoid, um, complications. The name is the theme of the event. It is designed to disturb you. And it did. Mission accomplished. Holy shite.
