A canal would have to cross the Sierra Madre. That would take a bunch of locks , if you could build the canal. Those locks would use a lot of water. There is none in abundance there like Panama has in Lake Gatun.

this idea is about as dumb as the Mayor of Birmingham that wanted to build a cruise terminal downtown and a canal to the ten-Tom waterway.

We need to shoot the next 500 that attempt to cross and there will be no need for a wall, surveliance, or more guards if we are serious about stopping it, anything else is just throwing money down a hole.
At the very worst right now they get a full room and board vacation and a trip back home, why not take the risk.
The US-Mexican border is the only place on earth the first world and third world share a border, you will never stop the flow of migrants with anything less than deadly force.
On the other hand Trump needs to make crystal clear to Enrique Peña Nieto that one more "transit visa" will result in the border being sealed to all people and goods for the indefinite future.

M-60s rigged to motion detectors. Yeah, there will be some wasted ammo on javelinas and maybe some livestock becomes collateral damage. But I'm telling you, after mowing down 6 or 8 groups of illegals, filling out paperwork in triplicate and waiting their turn won't look so onerous to them.
