I've been on a life long boycott of BL.
My conspiracy theory is this was planned to tank the stock so the CEO/Major Stockholders/Company could buy stock back at a much lower price. They'll lay low for a couple of years and then start rebuilding the brand.

Backlash I don't think is accurate. The people who drink budweiser didn't become anti-trans. They were always of the opinion that you can not change your genetic sex.
Also, the framing of the sentence elides the point that the woman who created the campaign was a wealthy highly educated person who had real contempt for the blue collar types who were drinking their beer. She was the person punching down on a culture she despised and looked down upon.
Any company that allows their corporate policies to express contempt for their customers richly deserves to be boycotted and perhaps driven entirely out of business.
