Hot take: SouthWest isn't much (if any) cheaper than the majors.

Southwest would do pretty well in Baton Rouge. A lot of people drive to New Orleans to fly on Southwest.

If they can offer non stop routes to Chicago or Orlando, they'll fill up a lot of seats and likely keep pricing of legacy carriers there reasonable.

what this guy said, BN has been a glorified commuter airline for years, with special legislature to help them flourish, not so much anymore, BTR won't support many non-stops that aren't to an airline's hub, thanks Alfred Kahn

Depends on where youre going

Also factor in no bag fees including oversized

Even my skis fly free, they charge like $50 other carriers

It'll be difficult for BTR to compete with the direct SWA flights MSY offers but I agree, flights to Dallas or houston would see significant demand

Also Chicago Midway, probably not non-stop but at least direct.

Southwest service to a few of their hubs is within BTR's wheel house though. That's a good, attainable goal for them.

kind of a PanAm/TWA in reverse, they don't have many places to go to from their hubs other than to other small towns, if you're going to a hub city where they're at sort of a Remora airport, you'll more than likely be going on the legacy carrier

The interim director of the airport said at a discussion about the airport's future, Baton Rouge used to not be in the business model of Southwest. However, Ralph Hennessy said, the business model is changing. The airport hopes meetings to secure the airline will take off.

The previous BTR airport director left 2 months ago and BTR is already in negotiation with new service. In his time BTR lost service while MSY grew. He focused too much on the business parks and airport property development that he lost sight of what an airport is supposed to offer: flights to the public.

Kudos to the interim director getting more done in his 2 months than the previous 21 years combined. I hope this works out for BTR and WN is able to sustain service and not fizzle out like Frontier and Vison did.

I don't see them expanding to Baton Rouge as Southwest is purportedly growing their mini-hub in New Orleans by 10 additional flights in 2020 when the new MSY is built.

I'd guess Dallas and Orlando would be most likely. Chicago and Baltimore-Washington also makes sense.

I wouldn't be surprised to see DEN as an option. BTR connects to ATL and CLT on the East Coast and DFW and IAH in Texas.

DEN could give BTR travelers better connection options and WN only flys MSY-DEN 2x daily.

Richmond is probably the most similar sized airport to BTR that WN already serves and they fly to MCO and MDW, 2 of their hubs, from there.

If WN comes to BTR I would guess they would operate to DEN and MDW.

Way too close to New Orleans, and not a big enough business travel market. There's little point.

Richmond is a much larger market than Baton Rouge. Baton Rouge is basically the same sized market as Jackson, MS. Southwest served Jackson for 17 years, and left due to incompetent city leadership and people driving to MSY to fly.

Southwest would likely operate the largest commercial aircraft to-and-from Baton Rouge. Southwest uses Boeing 737s. Current commercial airlines at the Baton Rouge airport operate smaller, 55-passenger jets. The 737 holds close to 140 passengers.

Doesn't delta operate 717s in BTR? I know they operate them out of LFT and thought I saw them in BTR as well.

Yeah, I just saw that RIC has several regularly scheduled mainline flights. I remember it being smaller years ago the only time I flew into there.

Like I said, I hope this works out for BTR. But I would be cautiously optimistic if I lived there.

The article isn't correct, I don't know of any 55 seater in service. 50, yes, 45, yes, 55?

Delta has one mainline flight a day usually on an A319 with CR9s and CR7s mixed in.

United has E175s and E145s

and AA is going to replace some 50 seaters with 2 CR7 flights to BTR.

MSY is about to become the nicest airport in the Southeast and will attract even more passengers.
