Some Baton Rouge flights will become seasonal, but city could see new flights to Chicago, D.C.

Caldwell spoke over the phone from Dallas, where airport authorities, the mayor's office and the Baton Rouge Area Chamber were pitching American Airlines to begin direct service to Chicago and Washington D.C. The runways in the nation's capital are already operating at full capacity, so if Baton Rouge gets a direct flight, it will have to take a landing slot from an existing route, but Caldwell said the city is prepared to make a strong argument on its behalf for both cities.

Via Airlines is struggling and will scale down service from some airports - including BTR.

quote:

Via Airlines arrived amid much fanfare last year and began service to Austin, TX and Orlando in September. Austin has proven popular with young adults and business travelers, but the twice-weekly flights to Central Florida only averaged about 45 percent capacity on Via's 50-seat planes, Metro Airport spokesman Jim Caldwell said.

Via may scale back service to Orlando but will keep the popular Austin route.

American may add service to ORD (Chicago) and DCA (Washington DC).

Nice

How strong is the New Orleans mafia that they’re able to keep Southwest out of Baton Rouge? BTR would explode with growth if they were able to land Southwest.

Can BTR handle planes that size on the reg? I honestly don't have a clue.

When I started at LSU in 2008 there was a direct flight from Chicago to Baton Rouge. I think starting early 09 it stopped and I had to fly one stop the rest of my college days, kind of sucked.

I love direct flights which is why I mainly choose MSY over BTR. My home is 45 mins to MSY and 35min to BTR so distance from airport really doesn't matter to me.

Lol, that's not what's keeping southwest out of btr. It would be their smallest destination by far.

I think we'll see AA to DCA and UA to ORD. If btr even gets both.

I can't see AA flying to 4 cities from BTR.

It did for a few months after Katrina until MSY picked back up.

AA had a flight to Chicago

Northwest had a flight to Memphis

I enjoyed using both.

Yes. Southwest flies 737s. Hardly “large” planes.

I check MSY to see if there's a direct flight, if not I'll use BTR. It's so much easier to get in and out of quickly.

Pensacola gets 1.6 million passengers. About twice as much as BTR.

BTR is a great little airport, but with MSY growing so rapidly, and with a new terminal almost complete, BTR is in a pickle.

BTR is falling behind.

MSY and LFT are both getting new terminals. The only thing BTR has going for it is connivence. MSY and LFT have short lines as well.

Not everyday but they could fill 1-2 daily 737's based on the heavy competition and direct price drop it would cause to places such as (HOU/DAL/MDW/ATL).

If people in the metro area are able to fly for $140 to a connecting hub it would retain a very large presence from Prairieville to Lafayette.

Still it would take a very large incentive as well a commitment of airport improvements to land Southwest who is doing very well in New Orleans.

Let's be honest. BTR can barely run the few airlines and flights it has now. It's not set up to be anything than a puddle jumper metro. I deal with BTR and it's employees very often and I have little to no faith that these plans.

But they seat about 120+ right? That's what I mean. Not physically.

I feel like this stopped running shortly after 9/11 for a few years. Great, short, and convenient flight.

I didn't mind connecting in Memphis at all. That place was hopping with decent food options before Northwest went under.
