There is a really good documentary on Netflix called The Downfall of Boeing that goes into detail about why they have fallen off of a cliff. Long story short is the Engineers stopped running it and now the Wall Street suits run it and seek to extract every dime they can from the company at the cost of safety, designs and employee retention.
They are no longer the plucky American company proudly based in Seattle. They are yet another corporate entity with their operations based in DC so that they can effectively lobby the government to overlook the corners they keep cutting when designing and making these planes.

Some lessons learned:
- The 757 airframe should not have been hastily retired after 9/11. Instead it should have been modified. Then there'd be no reason for a MAX-9 or MAX-10 (or a A321).
- The MAX should have been a new airframe rather than based on the the 50+ year old 737 - which has a narrow and short landing gear and limited ability to support larger turbofans.
- Boeing should be in more control of their suppliers to avoid issues like door plugs from blowing out.
- Boeing should avoid a software solution (MCASS) to a hardware problem by not having hardware problems.

Well they haven't actually learned anything. If anything they've put all their efforts into getting the MAX recertification and back into production instead of having its engineers get to work on a newer and better airplane. Boeing isn't ever going to catch airbus again. It'll take a new American company run by real visionaries to bring America to the forefront of aviation.

One of these things breeds incompetence and inefficiency.
The other seeks to drive those things from the system.
Figure out which one matches the other.

An Xbox 360 has more technological power than a space shuttle. Why?
New products = new problems. You'd rather not have new problems when sending people to space. The same goes for airplanes and sending people 37,000 feet into the sky.

Im not a huge fan of unions but they're not really responsible for Boeing's demise.

Boeing got work to do for sure…like firing all McDonnell Douglas holdovers & returning to an engineering-focused company. But let’s not pretend Airbus is some squeaky-clean company either. In fact, they’ve been very corrupt in the past & have a massive advantage from the EU.

Say Baw, the 757 wasn’t retired hastily. They ended production because of very low market demand at the time. I’m quite sure Boeing would’ve loved to continue building one of the best airliners on the planet & modernizing it. Hindsight 20/20

Can confirm this is true a the North Charleston campus.
