BRPD, the N-word, old e-mails, & having to learn about systemic racism

Two Baton Rouge police officers were ordered to complete training on the impacts of systemic racism last month after department leadership became aware of old email exchanges containing racist language.
The emails — which were sent and received from official Baton Rouge Police Department accounts in 2014 and 2015 — were released in response to a public records request this year and had not become public until this week. They add to evidence that racial tensions have long simmered within the department's ranks, even before the 2016 police shooting of Alton Sterling, which caused some to question whether an underlying culture of intolerance among officers had surfaced during that fatal encounter.

I never understood why some people can say that word but others can’t

Were the officers white or black?

You don't say.

Every race uses words to describe other races that offend. Some more offended than others. What’s the news? Grow a thicker skin and drive on. Grown people getting upset over names is so counterproductive. Call me whatever you want. I could give a shite.

The other exchange is between a Baton Rouge cop and his wife from November 2015 in which she wrote "no n***** will ever bring me down" and "they wonder why (they're) called n******." The husband did not respond with the same language, but didn't condemn it either
His wife has a dirty arse mouth but that shouldn't fall on the cop and get him in trouble

Because words have power and meaning behind them based on who says them. Your boss saying “you’re fired” has a much different meaning than your friend saying “you’re fired”.
White People in this country spent decades using it as a derogatory word. So when white people use the word, there is historical precedence that takes effect. Even though you may not mean harm by saying it that history is important.
Black culture attempts to flip the narrative by embracing the word and reducing its negative effects. This is actually a common trait among different languages where there is a dominant race and a subservient race. The subservient tries to embrace the derogatory language by giving it its own meaning. You see this with the Spanish and South American natives as well.
