Serious question: what designates a mass murderer from a regular thug shite head? For that matter, what defines a serial killer from a mass murderer? Or are the two synonymous?

I thought a serial killer always killed a "type". A mass murderer killed a lot of people all at once, and a spree killer killed randomly and in quick succession.

FBI definitions:
A mass murderer kills 4 or more in a single event with no "cooling off" period.
A spree killer kills multiple people at two or more locations in a chain of events.
A serial killer kills multiple people over a period of time with "cooling off" periods in between, and usually linked by certain characteristics, MO, or other elements.
