Have you seen “The good, the bad, the ugly”? It’s the ugly.

Become a coyote in your free time. Pays $6000 a head, from what I hear.

Not as many things to do as McAllen (an hour west) but there’s so many restrictions anyway. But really good food, 30 minutes from SPI, and some historical sites. In the old days I’d recommend doing some shopping across the border in Matamoros but not anymore
There are some good bars but i have no clue if they’re even open. Good place to do some bird watching as well.
You’ll be fine for 2 weeks

I spend a lot of time down there.
the vermillion is pretty good food.
Take the toll to SPI and do some fishing or just hang on the beach. I have to go down there for work a good bit and I’ve gone and drank beers at a bar on the island a time or two and watched a sunset.
McAllen is a bit more lively with better food, but it’s an hour away.

I lived there for a long time
The Vermillion restaurant is very good!
South Padre Island is nice - we used to go eat at Blackbeard’s on the island and go fishing on the pier in port Isabel.
I’ve never been to Vera’s - Southmost was never the greatest neighborhood and we lived on the other side of town - but the reviews are great so I wouldn’t hesitate to try it, and Southmost isn’t as bad as we thought it was back in the day
Disco de Oro used to have awesome tortillas - but it’s been years since I’ve been.
There are a few museums and the Spanish architecture downtown is nice to look at - if you like that sort of thing.
Other than that it’s very Mexican - so the food and margaritas are pretty good everywhere
If you venture to Matamoros - all tourists go to Garcia’s (lol) - there’s also a taco place called Siberia that’s really good - but one of my friends says they have some in Brownsville now

i will add that some of my favorite customers in the state are in the RGV.
i work with school districts all over the state with ones as big as Katy, Spring, Austin, Arlington, etc.
My valley customers are my absolute favorite. humble, hard working white, brown, and black people that believe in community. the only place i've ever felt unwelcome down there was out in Rio Grande City and Roma, but those are some run down, corrupt areas.
eta: i am a happily married man, but there are some very attractive latina ladies in the McAllen/Mission/Sharyland areas.

Trust me. Brownsville is nothing to brag about. Getting there is not fun.

If you fish take a rod and reel, hit the surf early and late with a gold spoon or top water.

I once needed some zoning and building permit info from the City of Brownsville. It took a while to find someone able and willing to communicate with me in English.
