Plumber is the only correct answer. If he has any business sense, he’ll end up retiring a millionaire.

IT is the way, the truth, and the light. All he has to do is get a COMPTIAA A+ cert and he can get an entry level job in IT very easily.
I went from making $31k in my first IT job to $100k in 5 years.

When people talk about legit money in the trades they are usually talking about people who own their own businesses. Make sure he does his research about what is feasible for him to be striving for. You can run a plumbing outfit with one plumber and a helper or two. Welding can often be one guy. HVAC usually seems to involve more people and sometimes very large expensive pieces of equipment. If he just wants to work, spend some time thinking about what he wants it to look like in 7-10 years.

Pipe designer? He doesn't already have an idea of what he wants to do?

Welder or machinist.

First off, you don’t want to be a tradesman for life. You want to learn a trade so you can own a trade company. 2ndly consider work life balance, hours, and atmosphere. Plumbing and electrical mostly work 7-5 M-F and local to wherever they want to live. HVAC is similar.

Seriously though.... elevator union guys make a lot of money.
Regulations were extremely favorable to union elevator guys. They make a lot of money. Travel a lot too.

I'd say electrician with HVAC as a close second
Dime a frickin dozen. HVAC techs work is like 1/2 commissions. Electricians ain’t getting paid.
Plumber is hard work but if I was doing it over, it would be this. After apprenticeship and 5 years, I go off and start my own business. Just pile the money up.

Electricians are needed REALLY bad right now. If he commits he can be making a ton of money in a few years if he gets his card.

Do whatever he likes the best. Extra money is made by doing side jobs.

There is an art to welding. There are plenty of shitty welders. Not saying your brother isn’t capable, but understand there’s more to it than striking an arc. I work with an Ironworker that’s a pretty talented welder. He’s been doing so for almost 30 years. He’s told me numerous times his 16 year old is better than he is. He’s just got a knack for it, and is amazingly talented especially for a kid with little experience.
HVAC and Electricians are in short supply. If your brother wants to put in the work, he’s got a legit shot and running a crew fairly young.

Welding baw
It’s still a good trade. But thanks to the shutdown of pipeline work, there’s a whole lot of very experienced welders out there looking for work.
Before I recommended anyone go into welding I’d first recommend
1. Diesel mechanic
2. HVAC
3. Plumbing
4. Electrician

I can tell you for sure there are nowhere near enough qualified InfoSec people out there.
