So it was a side by side and the accident was not being able to get out of the thing because of all the safety features.
It's going to be something more like this, not a ATV

ok I get that you're trying to be a good person, which you very well may be, but why does this matter? Are her parents reading this? Who cares what is discussed here or not? It has zero effect on the child or her family if all we are doing is discussing the incident

Not sure, as I've never rode these assuming it's a side-by-side.
Here's a comparison on some sport ones LINK
Ranging from 1,000 -- 1,500 lbs.
ETA: Entire page, not just the 4 at the top.

Sounds like she either didn't know how to handle it or that it might have been too much power for her... sad story all the way around

God, that's terrifying to read.

critcial but stable.... can any of you medical folks explain what this means? Possible chances of recovering?

I have a Polaris 850 and my son has a 110. He is eleven and never gets to ride without me. I am over cautious to the extreme and I am teaching him to be the same. These are only for fun and to cruise through the forest trails around our home. No steep hills up or down and no sideways slope transversals.
But my neighbors have a 14 year old who they just let do whatever the hell. He and his buddies ride miles and miles in the woods and I have seen them doing 40-50 on those trails. I tell my son they are idiots and their parents are idiots. One of them will probably die or be severely injured before it is said and done.
I am about to read all of the stories in this thread to him to reinforce what I am teaching him.

It's free speech for sure, and there are always lessons to be learned and discussion can possibly save somebody else. But, The easiest thing for me to say is that I've been in that exact spot before. It's unimaginable as a parent how difficult and painful it is to have a critically injured child--and yes--they very well could be reading this. I found very similar comments about me on fb when I was watching my daughter struggle on life support after a preventable accident. The parents will never live it down I can promise you that. Take it or leave it, but my advice is to be sensitive to the fact that the family is most certainly grieving and distraught, and these things have a way of finding themselves to the subjects of the post.

The article doesn't say she was driving. Too much speculation here. A child's life is hanging in the balance, it's not the best time to question the parents judgement.
Yes, yes it does:
"where she maneuvered the ATV to the right to avoid running over a drainage ditch located near the pond, officers said. She over corrected causing the ATV to enter the pond."
My dad rode motorcycles as a kid, my parents never would let me even get a dang go-kart. I wanted one like 5 years straight, looking back it was probably not the worst decision on their part.
Riding motorcycles on a track, at a course, or otherwise in a very controlled setting is one thing. Riding them in the country without supervision before you can legally drive a car is a completely different story. Its not safe, it shouldn't be legal, and its completely stupid as a parent to let someone under 15-16 do it. I don't care what you say.
I rode plenty in HS, some of the dumbest days of my life were spent with friends on 4 wheelers. Sooo many ways to hurt and kill yourself.
Very sad for the girl, no way an 8 year old should of been driving without an adult with her outside of a course. Just no freaking way.

It means she's likely on a ventilator. Stable is good. Chances of survival are probably good. Recovering mostly dependent on extent of brain injury.

this was basically me when I'd visit family every summer
I flipped that thing numerous times on steep hills. Hell, I'd be gone for an entire day and I guess they just figured I was fine. Really crazy, I might mention this to my mom later now that it's on my mind.

quote:8 year olds still believe in Santa, dont like pussy, eat their boogers, and have no concept of all kinds of shite.
It's up to the parent. Kids start racing pee wee motocross around 4 or 5 with Yamaha PW50s. By 8 they are jumping higher than I would now, but I'm old and have the fear.
Kids at 8 are doing all sorts of shite in motorsports, especially in Europe. The karting scene over there is nuts.
It should be based more on the kid and the skill/responsibility they present more on just an outright helicopter NO on all things like this.
Letting them drive ATVs is not a wise move IMHO.

What kind of seat belts do those kids ATV's have? I'm guessing they are 5 point? Sounds like she was too young to know how to get her seat belt off by herself when she panicked, and was caught underwater most likely.
