Steve Jobs was being interviewed and told a story of an engineer trying to sway him into using the 3.5". floppy. When He asked, "Give me a really good reason...". The engineer took it and placed it in his shirt pocket. Steve then said "Ok, go with that!".
So yeah, it's true.

The 3.5" prédates Apple and Jobs by a few years.
It was a IBM/Sony deal, but I'm going from memory here...

I'm going from an article I read.
Upon looking further, you are indeed correct. Sony, IBM and HP sort of settled on the size, and Apple used it as well. Changed it to increase size, but used it.
