There are stories that the Germans learned about the distinctive ping made when an M1 rifle ejects its en bloc clip after the 8th round is fired, and that it meant the G.I.'s gun was empty--and popped up then and attacked. There are stories of G.I.s learning of Germans doing this, carrying extra empty en bloc clips, and dropping them to make Germans pop up--at which point the G.I.s opened fire.

Regardless of whether that really happened, if you've shot an M1, you've learned about the ping, and what a great gun it is.

My father said GIs would hit the clips on their helmets to get the ping.
