I lived there for several years, and yes, the roads were in terrible shape. A lot of it is due to having a continuous freeze/thaw cycle in the winter that does a great job of making potholes. People in Louisiana complain about the roads but they need to see Pittsburgh roads after a tough winter.
That, and the cars after the last snow. Just covered in brownish-gray salt that will rust your undercarriage all to hell.

That bridge is a POS. I've run under that bridge while visiting relatives in Pitt before. SEe picture of what it looked like before the collapse.

That probably falls under the city's purview for maintenance?

Sounds like the plot on an episode of Veep.
Kamala blew the bridge to make Joe feel good.

Yep. If you're not from there or do business there a lot, when you come out of the Fort Pitt Tubes your head will explode when you wanna get on 279 but instead get sucked off and head into the Strip District instead.
One time years ago I was traveling through Pittsburgh at night and there was a closed exit and I had just been following GPS not paying much attention and I think I went through the Fort Pitt tunnel about 5 times, the tunnel would block the GPS and by the time it had acquired again I was way off track. I finally got off the interstate to pull out my maps and figure out how to get extricate myself from the mess and found myself at the Andy Warhol Museum, I suppose it was my 15 (a lot more) minutes of stupidity.

The other day I was curious and started doing some research on how much gas tax states actually use for road upkeep. I found an article with this graphic from a study done in 2020:
This shows the states that have diverted gas tax revenue to other entities or projects within the states. It is the percentage of tax revenue that is diverted.

I bet the maintenance for this bridge had been collected 1000 times over already and just ‘reallocated.’

Pittsburgh is a beautiful part of the country but I second what you said. As a Louisianan even I was appalled by the size of chunks missing from the interstate surface.

What do you think the odds are. 1/10000000

I mean Republican or Democrat the infrastructure in this country needs fixing. I dont think there is any argument about that. How do we go about fixing it is the problem.
Stop shoving pork into every goddamn bill. Immediately declare lobbying illegal on penalty of death, insider trading is made to be illegal for politicians, force them to wear a patch of any company or individual that gave them more than 1,000 dollars, make the bidding process public with zero contact between the politicians and bidders, punishible by 15 years in federal prison, two term limits on every single elected position in the United States, and 15 year limits on all bureaucratic employees.
