this thread is a good example of the total disconnect of the military from the general population...

Bride is a self-aggrandizing lunatic for kicking him out.

With that said, it's poor form to show up to anyone's celebration, whether it be their wedding, their retirement, their graduation, their receiving an award, whatever, dressed in a way that you know will grab attention and distract from your host. That's just basic social etiquette.

But people breach basic social etiquette every day. Any normal human being would internally roll their eyes and move on with life. This woman has serious problems.

Bride overreacted for sure.

But military folks who just have to wear their uniform to formal functions are 99/100 douchebags in all aspects of life.

Please show me where people have been offended by a military uniform. Not just where someone made fun of someone for wearing it or said it was weird or whatever. I want to see where someone was struck to the core by the thought of a military uniform.

Why does this make them a douchebag?

Hell I wouldn't find it offensive and I have no idea why this hit this lady so bad. It did though, she may be a big fan of the military, just something about the uniform that day really drove her nuts, may have nothing to do with the military itself, just the timing of someone with something different than what she wanted. There really is no telling from the little we know of the story. She could also just be very anti military and be lying in the article. Who knows...

I mean, it's pretty clear. It was a black tie event. Dude wore his military garb. She was upset by that.

A bunch of military folks thinking their shite dont stink in this thread. Why I have a issues with people that put them on a pedestal cause they dont need the extra boost with many, especially ones that didnt do jack, already up high enough in their own head. Same level of stupid arguments for the "right" to a store discount
to me, that reads like the poster takes exception with those that served but never served in combat or were so far behind the lines seeking attention vs those that actually risked life and limb for our just cause.
Stolen valor isnt limited to those that never served, some served but exaggerate their time. THOSE are usually the ones that seek attention, those that took the risks know of others who made the ultimate sacrifice and much like Butch are humble about themselves and dont CONSTANTLY remind us that they rose around in a tank.

THOSE are the ones that some find annoying,

know anyone like that?

It use to be the custom that if an active duty service member was attending a black tie event, they were expected to wear their uniform. Nobody made a big deal one way or the other because that was the custom. Why is it such a big deal now? What’s changed? And why?

I like how about 70% of the posts in this thread go like this

Bride was a crazy overreacting bitch

Now let me spend 2 paragraphs talking about how military dudes in uniform are attention whoring douchebags and make excuses for the bride because weddings are stressful.

To something generic like a party or gala, or to something a specific host is celebrating? I genuinely don't know the answer; I could simply see a distinction being drawn between the two.

this is not true.

i recall invitations that require black tie and have also mentioned military may wear their uniforms.

it is not and never has been an unwritten rule that you are expected to wear your uniform. You made that up.

Back in the day it was the norm. Maybe less so now but it's certainly not strange or uncommon and it's definitely not attention whoring.

wearing their uniforms doesn't make them a douchebag

Oh yeah. I’ve meet a few guys like that. Everyone has. And while I don’t mind talking about my time in the army, I don’t make it out to be anything more than it was. I was not Rambo or Audy Murphy by a long stretch. I was nothing more than a simple tanker. Not exactly glorious by any stretch. Yes I’m proud of being a tanker. But is it anything extraordinary? No.

My main thought on all this is it has always been the custom that if someone is on active duty and they’re attending any formal event, wearing their dress uniform is the custom. But it appears now that bothers many for some reason that I still have not got a straight answer on.
