re: Bricks and Minifigs (Lego reseller), scammed a family out of $200k in legos

Ben said he found out that the AirBNB owner is friends with the cops and allegedly made the report saying he overheard them all talking about stolen legos. Of course they were talking about that because that is why they were in town.

I didn't remember Ben saying the AirBnB owner is friends with the cops.

The Airbnb owner and one of the cops were buddies.
For what isn’t exactly clear but it had something to do with hydro or hydra, which is potentially either a cop training thing or having to do with doing paint transfers to decorate guns.

In the unredacted body cam footage, there is a video of the Airbnb owner and one of the cops talking about the times they have gone to the shooting range together

The relationship has been a topic with some of the more plugged in legal folks talking about the police conduct/search warrant

Coffeezilla did a pretty good accounting of it and it was still over $100K with about $80K unaccounted for.
Did you watch the video? He said there's only about 10-20k that is unaccounted for.
It sounds like the Gormans sold a whole bunch of it and then didn't pay Mansell because they are lazy retards who aren't equipped to run a retail store.

Coffeezilla’s investigation is now on YouTube.
Very interesting video and nobody in it is 100% innocent. There are frickups all around, but the BAM guys are lying through their teeth and the old adage applies, the coverup is worse than the crime.
The Uhaul excuse made 0 sense and yes, the employee said they unloaded legos for maybe 4hrs that night, but he could be embellishing. The hard facts still show around 3hrs between the last photo in the store and the drop off of the Uhaul that night. They said a 1hr drive between the stores, so that still means 1.5hrs of unloading could have happened.
And if not, why did it take him that long to leave the store and drop off the Uhaul? What did he do for that extra hour to two hours.

I meant around $80K is owed to the family possibly

No idea if they are accounting for this in their timeline, but uhauls are SLOW. If it normally takes you an hour to drive between two points in normal vehicle, it will take you probably at least 1:20 if not more in a uhaul.
Also he has to drive the uhaul back to the drop off location (and maybe he stopped to fill it up before returning it idk).
I agree that the uhaul store from McNeff after vehemently denying that they ever had a Uhaul is extremely suspect, but if you remove drive times between stores and the drive back to the drop off location, you have a LOT less than 4 hours and probably less than 2 hours.
Also have to factor in that this former employee is recounting something that happened nearly 2 years ago at this point, so he could be completely misremembering the amount of time they were unloading.

Agree, and from the size of that Uhaul in the pic outside the store, even if stacked to the top with legos, a handful of people could unload that inside of an hour.
Again, maybe they didnt, but the coverup is the problem. The BAM guys said numerous times that there was no Uhaul that night, but once shown the pic, the story changed.

But its hard not to see the larger issue in this story as being the Gormans who couldnt keep track of their layaways and just didnt pay Mansell accurately

Yea BAM is definitely not clean in this. Not one bit.
But if I'm betting, I'm saying the Gormans are the source of the vast majority of this controversy. Coffee brings up that a substantial amount appears to have been sold going off POS data, but was never accounted for on her own records and Mansell never got paid off those sales and she's just like "well idk I guess that could of happened, I didn't actually keep track of that stuff for months on end".
Like yea lady you actually sold the bulk of it and then didn't pay what was owed because you are lazy and dumb as a rock.

nough weird stuff going on with the actual store takeover
I had heard it somewhere early on in the story, but it didn't come up in the interviews and its neither here nor there regarding the legos, but could go to how BAM corporate operates...
I had read something that when the Gormons took over the store, the billing for rent and other things wasn't properly transferred, which is why they got behind on payments and why BAM forced them out
However, seeing how they handled their accounting, they prob just couldn't manage shite on their own and didn't pay.

Her being lazy and not doing the books isn’t being denied.
Corporate doing a hostile takeover and telling her it was their problem now kind of puts the ball in their court with regards to trying to unwind the mess.

Definitely
I honestly think the majority of people involved here are to blame. Reckless Ben didnt do nearly enough proper investigating and instead was more focused on turning this into a publicity stunt. The Gormans are the root blame for the discrepancy in payments. The company is to blame for handling this in the worst way possible and trying to wipe their hands clean of any responsibility in making Mansell whole

Agree.
As Coffee points out, and I 100% agree with him, they should have just paid Mansell a reasonable amount that fairly compensates for what he was owed and then gone after the Gormans.
This is a 8 or 9 figure business, quietly pay this dude 50-80k or whatever they can agree to and move forward.

Yup and its on video her saying that she needs the data to pay out the consignment, to which the dude acknowledges.
Funny the CEO's story changes so much. I remember seeing him say they had no clue about the consignment and that was against policy, only to admit he was aware. Same with the closing of the video, claims he doesn't have spreadsheet of the supposed inventory only to be shows that there is one that his team has earmarked.
No matter what, BAM is doing more harm to their brand than all this is worth and should just fall on the sword, come up with a reasonable number to pay the dude and put it behind them

this fiasco came up on Shane Gillis's podcast this week randomly.

They should never have let it get this far.
