But the left told me that Kavanaugh was a sexist, racist partisan who would ensure Trump's racist policies are enacted across America.

The right told me that Kavanaugh was a fair constitutionalist who would rule according to the constitution regardless of partisan gain.

Imagine that, the right was right again.

While I understand and agree that it was probably historically rooted in racism, where’s justice for the people today when one holdout can let someone free? I mean really, if you have a fair jury selection and 10 out of 12 say guilty, is that not enough?

Considering people are sent to prison across the other 48 states, that argument doesn't hold water.

How did this case get there? Who challenged the change?

Ramos v. Louisiana, No. 18-5924

He was convicted of murder by a jury vote of 10 to 2 in 2016. The amendment to the state Constitution that barred non-unanimous verdicts only apply to crimes after 2018. If he wins, a lot of convictions may have to be overturned.

Sounds guilty to me or he wouldn't have been in court.

They didn’t. It was all political theater.

Think our state’s legal system is a shite show now? Wait until we have to start retrying a ton of old cases where witnesses have died, evidence has been disposed of, etc.

There will be a whole new crop of released murderers from the farm because it won’t be possible to retry most of them.

What percentage were convicted with less than unanimous verdicts?

These people would have been free or unanimously convicted anyway had Louisiana not had such an obviously arse-backwards law on the books.

I don’t have the numbers in front of me, I am just going off the fact that it will be every case before 2018 and that the state’s history of retrying old murders has had problems to say the least.

Considering how full Angola is, simple numbers suggest it will be a LOT of them.

WTF are we still talking about this for? They put a law on the books last year that did away with non-unanimous juries.
Did they simultaneously free all previous prisoners who were convicted without a unanimous decision?

Would you consider potentially releasing two criminals too high of a cost for the provided freedom of one innocent man?

If those two criminals go and murder someone, yes.

Respectfully disagree. I can think of nothing worst than being caged for a lifetime for a crime I didn't commit.
