Revisionist history. Bret Hart was arguably the top face, second only maybe to HBK, in the era that preceded Attitude.

All of their post-Hogan babyfaces were failures as draws (especially HBK). Final numbers after expenses:

April 01 1994 - March 30 1995: -$4,431,000
April 01 1995 - March 30 1996: +$3,319,000
April 01 1996 - March 30 1997: -$6,505,000
April 01 1997 - March 30 1998: +$8,446,000
April 01 1998 - March 30 1999: +$56,030,000
April 01 1999 - March 30 2000: +$68,973,000
April 01 2000 - March 30 2001: +$84,981,000

Those 98 through 2000 numbers are ridiculous considering they only made $32,000,000 last year despite over $800,000,000 in revenue.

Bret Hart was the biggest mark for Bret Hart in the world. He didn't draw in WWF and didnt draw in WCW....the constant there is Bret Hart.

Hogan was the biggest heel in the business at that time. Vince got out of that contract with Bret because he knew it he wasn’t worth it anymore. If Bret was a top draw he would have found a way to keep him.

For those of you interested in this whole backstory and the larger wwf/wcw fued, I recommend and signing up for wwe network and watching the monday night wars series and hbk/bret hart feud.

Its on ps4 and xbox.

That's not saying much. Both were terrible draws as champion.

Bret Hart was cool in the late 80s/early 90s but his persona never evolved and was real stale and boring by the late 90s.

HBK drew more money with DX than Hart could ever imagine.....specifically working with Tyson and SCSA.

ETA Just noticed you said pre-attitude....but still Beet never drew during the Attitude Era and certainly not in Dubya Cee Dubya.

I'm a big Bret Hart fan. My point was, the hottest he ever was in his career was after his heel turn.
