The 1964 Alaska Earthquake (Good Friday Earthquake) had a magnitude of 9.2 and was felt across south Louisiana, including Baton Rouge. While the earthquake itself was in Alaska, its tremors and associated waves were felt in Louisiana and other states along the Gulf Coast. The earthquake also triggered secondary earthquakes along local fault lines in the area.
Here's a more detailed explanation:
The 1964 Alaska Earthquake:
This earthquake, which occurred on March 27, 1964, was a megathrust quake with a magnitude of 9.2. It was the largest earthquake recorded in North American history.
Effects in South Louisiana:
Despite being thousands of miles away, the earthquake's effects were felt in south Louisiana, including Baton Rouge, in the form of seiches (wavelike oscillations of water) and felt reports of shaking.
Reported Seiches:
Seiches, with waves reaching up to 4 feet, were observed in various locations along rivers and bays in Louisiana, including the Amite River, Bayou Lafourche, and Calcasieu and Houston Ship Channels.
Possible Fault Movement:
Some reports linked cracks in a Baton Rouge public swimming pool to fault movement triggered by the earthquake.

There are no labor shortages... if they paid a decent pay they would have plenty of people to work.

To be a lifeguard requires knowing how to swim.

the reason they can’t hire lifeguards at liberty lagoon has little to do with wages. Would you allow your son or daughter to do it?

There is an LPB documentary on this called "Troubled Waters". It is an interesting overview of the civil rights era in BR.

Webb had a pool too. Never swam in that one, but we loved City Park pool.

If I were going to open pools all over the parish I would have lifeguards lined up.

I think at one time Webb Park may have been a Jewish country club. I remember going there in grade school for scout meetings and there was a big Star of David over the doorway. We were members of the Piedmont Club that later became Jefferson Highway Park. All the pools there have been removed.

Hilarious that someone would downvote this.
Yes, there was a thing called the Civil Rights Movement, and yes, Baton Rouge participated.

Howell Park had a pool through most of the 1980s. We played American Legion baseball at Howell Park, and watching the folks jump off the diving boards at the pool next to the baseball fields was entertainment at its best.
Webb Park had a pool well into the 1990s. As a BREC day camp counselor, my park would go swimming at Webb’s pool once a week. This was summer of 1993.
