Just for the record, mastiffs are gentle dogs. Not really aggressive at all.

Well, one day that pit bull is going to attack that child. So the pit had to defend the child today, you know, so in the future he can attack him.

You do know their are dozens of Mastiff breeds and some can be very vicious?
Cane Corso ( Italian Mastiff) and Presa canario( Canary Masiff) were war ,guard and fighting dogs and can be vicious.
Fila Brasileiro( Brazilian Mastiff) are extremely aggressive and it's actually encouraged as a breed standard that they be temperamental/ unfriendly to strangers.
