Do orthodontist recommend everyone gets braces? Do they ever tell anyone "Nah, you are good. Don't give me 6k."

They told my brotger that essentially. It was something like "you don't need braces if you prefer being a lonely freak of nature your whole life".
Come to think of it, that doc was a bit of a passive aggressive count....

If a child's bite is not perfect, you can expect the DDS to refer to an orthodontist. Orthodontist are in business to make money. Nowadays I see much more braces then just 15 or 20 years ago. It's almost like it's a fad now.

Yea, your brother didn't deserve that. He should have been cradled and nurtured.

For 3 of my sones it was pull wisdom teeth or they will cause braces due to the crowd of teefees. One had braces. Other 2 are still good yeeeeeeaaaaarrrrrrs later.

If your teeth are small, you may need some crown lengthening. Most orthodontists generally don't do that procedure.

I had braces 25 years ago, and they were extremely common. Most of my friends had them. I'm freaking grateful; I appreciate not having a gap anymore.
The biggest difference is that my parents' dental insurance covered them 100%. Don't really see that anymore.

Or they could do what us best for the patient and not their pocket

I think more people are doing them now purely for aesthetics.
To answer the original question, yes some orthodontists do say no. My oldest didn't want braces anyway but I took him for an evaluation to make sure there weren't any other issues. The orthodontist said he didn't need them.
My youngest got braces (set #1) at 8. It was partly for aesthetics but also because her adult teeth started coming in about 1 1/2 to 2 years early and she's petite so her mouth was very crowded. I took her for 2 opinions on early braces and both orthodontists said she's in the very small minority of young kids they would recommend braces for but neither of them pressured us to do it.
