For example, for each combatant, how many non-combatants are required so that the combatant can do their job? 4,6, 8?
And where are they located? In the States, in another detached location, in theater?
It appears by some of the arguments used here that these noncombatant support personnel (including medics, corpsmen, nurses, and doctors, I guess) aren't really veterans.
I wonder how many of the so-defined 'only those in combat' veterans would just as well do without these support personnel? Becasue they aren't really veterans, right?

The original poster looks at non-combat veterans as valor thieves. Ive seen a couple of non-combat veterans act like they are hot shite but most dont talk about their service because they are somewhat embarrassed about it. I played the system while the system played me. And seen some stand up cats with devout service history not blabber about their kills and deployments.

However that selfless service shite is bullshite (unless you are Pat Tillman type). You got a way out of whatever trailer park, hood, deadbeat job when you signed up. You earned skill sets, leadership ability (obviously some more than others), and a fricking check. So real veterans and honorable men dont need a pat on the fricking back for their service.

You're probably the type of salty POS that gives veterans a bad name sometimes. There are wounded vets who deserve that little government paycheck they will receive for life. so by your definition I wouldn't be a veteran of OIF. well I'd beg to differ sir. I left my blood sweat and tears in that shite hole and I do consider myself a veteran. I'm sorry I decided to stay in longer and further my career.

And in this old tanker's view, Medics hold a special place of honor in my book. You guys go where we go and do it virtually unarmed or at best lightly armed. Darth I appreciate your words. actually they have a lot meaning to me. I never wanted to be called "doc" unless I earned from by my guys. well anytime I talk any of them they never call me by my name only "doc". and everytime I hear them call me that I still get a little choked up.
so for all those who served honorably, weather during peacetime or wartime. you have given and sacrificed more than most. and if you never saw "combat" that doesn't make you any less of a veteran. thank you to my brothers and sisters in the service.

It takes a special breed to be a medic I think. During the First Gulf War our medics were mostly in 113's. You know how vulnerable those beer cans on tracks are. And despite this, they stayed right up on our arse so they'd be ready the moment they were needed. They went where we went. That takes some brass balls.

I can appreciate someone who has served in forward positions in actual combat zones viewing their service differently than someone who is a member of the military and never leaves the comfort of a US base or never even sniffs a combat situation.
I too make a distinction between a veteran and someone on active duty.
