What about the men and women who pilot drones?
What about the thousands of support staff/medical personnel that make sure front line soldiers can do their job?

As for the rest of your post, GFY & EABOD. Regardless of what someone did during their time in service, at one time they wrote a blank check to this country for up to and including his/her life. Active duty deserves the same respect. A man/woman doesn't need an honorable DD-214 to deserve your respect or thanks.

You're probably one of those vets that demands respect when you walk in a room, looking for free hand outs on Veterans day and brag about your service.

I am humble about my service to this country. While the thanks, support & free shite on Veterans day is greatly appreciated, it's not why I served.

When embarrassed by someone's gratitude, I simply express my thanks to them for the kind sentiment. "Your welcome" can be awkward in those moments indeed.

My experience on those lines is not veteran-related though, as I am not one.

Just my advice

Spent 8 years in but dont like being called a veteran because I never deployed overseas. I can imagine the suffrage and things seen. However that selfless service shite is bullshite (unless you are Pat Tillman type). You got a way out of whatever trailer park, hood, deadbeat job when you signed up. You earned skill sets, leadership ability (obviously some more than others), and a fricking check. So real veterans and honorable men dont need a pat on the fricking back for their service.

But you know what, thanks for your service.

You say you HAVE to deploy to be considered a Veteran, but the service member doesn't decide whether he/she gets to deploy.

I enlisted in 1992 as a Commo guy, active duty Army from then until I retired in 2012. Over my 20 years I was assigned to 2 light infantry units (brigade and battalion level), 2 artillery battalions, i was an instructor and a recruiter, but it wasn't until my LAST assignment at Ft Polk with the 4th Brigade, 10th Mountain Division that I got the opportunity to deploy to Afghanistan, with a support battalion.

Now, had I been involuntarily converted to a recruiter like they tried to do I would not have deployed, instead I would have stayed in Baton Rouge recruiting for my final 2 years in the Army. In your eyes, my 20 years in the Army wouldn't classify me as a Veteran? There's something wrong with your thinking there.
