Girlfriend (now wife) lived off Bayou Fountain in the late 80s while she was going to LSU. Lots of students lived in the area (especially off GSRI ["Innovation Park" now]).

I used to ride my bike from Bluebonnet area, to Goodwood, out to the LSU lakes and back, and not worry about getting killed in the mid 80s.

Truly was a magical time.

Coursey between Jones Creek and Sherwood was under construction in '84, wasn't even open to traffic. Me and my gang use to go play in all the storm drains and ride our bikes up and down it.

I love that the library has all these old maps online. They are pretty cool to look at.

Specifically with this map, you can see the where the lack of foresight and planning dropped off. One entrance subdivisions, road disconnections, etc. Such a shame that the people in charge weren't thinking logically.

Edit: I was trying to go back and find a map I saw one time of the propsed BR Bypass, but stumbled across this map from 1964.

LINK

It shows a proposed I-10 route that would have followed the current path, but once past Jefferson Terrace would have been on the south side of St George Catholic Church and hit Perkins and Highland Road west of Pecue and bisecting the Highland Lakes subdivision.

Also it shows Highland Park and Rodney drive already built, before Kenilworth was added in between them. I bet most assume that would have been the opposite.

Also, this map ( LINK) from 1969 shows a similar path, but it looks like they established the current route in the 1972 map ( LINK).

When Bluebonnet was being built in the early 80s that was a teen party spot. A place to park cars and drink cases of beer without being bothered- the way the Old School rolled. So was the Stumberg area - we used to camp out there behind the old Killowatt club and there were deer stands and stuff out there in the woods.

Its not that much different

Which is sad

Not really. Development is penned in by wetlands, Miss river. It's not like Houston or Dallas that can sprawl in all directions into the unlimited prairie land to build their "planned communities" of strip malls and cookie cutter houses.

South of I-10 looks quite different. What used to be fields of corn or pasture is now Mall of LA, U Club, Bluebonnet extension neighborhoods, etc. Not the kind of rapid change that many suburbs see in a few decades but it's something.

Wouldn't be surprised if it was in the 2000s. That bridge on Tom Dr. for example was not even finished until 2000.

Might have been. I wonder if they extended it at the same time when that walmart came up behind Cortana

The old map also explains why people still call Perkins East "Old Perkins Road".

Old Perkins was disconnected and became Perkins Road East. Thats why there's still an Old Perkins West and East on the other side of Highland. More ya know. The red line shows how Old Perkins West used to connect to Old Perkins East.

You could potentially train year-round in South La for outdoor sports is also what made it attractive. That's my guess.

Brutally humid in the summer, cold and rainy most of the time in the winter. There are a few nice days in October and March.

Yeah, I can see a lot of athletes passing up Colorado Springs for that.

They were thinking quite logically, about the best way to line their pockets.

Had several friends who lived off GSRI in the mid 80's. I remember driving from Tiger Land to Gardere at 3am it was dark as Fk and you had to avoid the raccoons, possum, and armadillos - lots of road kill. We use to hunt squirrel, rabbits, and dove where L'auberge is today

Also use to pick shrooms on the LSU property (Brightside / River Rd) where they raised cows
