Would be smarter to do New Orleans metro first then expand out

Kenner is where the airport is.

With a stop at MSY this could legitimately kill the Baton Rouge airport. I’m surprised BTR hasn’t put up more resistance to this. Or if they will.

With that attitude we should never do anything to improve our state.
It's not improving anything, it's a waste. Why would people drive to a station in Baton Rouge, pay to get on, take roughly the same amount of time to get to New Orleans, then have to pay for transportation once in New Orleans (eating up more time). All the while giving up the flexibility you would have had if you would have just taken your car. It makes even less sense to have the train stop at all of these places in between.
It's embarrassing how easy it is for the gaggle of grifters in the state capitol to steal from the general public.

Correct, but you don't have to be the one driving.
Going to the airport you don't have to pay to park or bribe someone to drive you down.
If you commute to work you can get something done, relax, sleep on your way down.
If you want to go to a concert/party you don't have to worry about someone being sober to drive.
Also, it makes BR more of an option for people travelling to NOLA for events.

Nothing gets killed in Louisiana. There are all kinds of silly redundant and unneeded things in Louisiana that should be killed but they keep on trucking along. Universities and Colleges for instance. The airport is not going anywhere.

What about when you get to New Orleans, get back to Baton Rouge?

We can’t maintain our roads, handle our traffic demands, build bridges or loops, or fund anything with our infrastructure as it is, but we’re going to propose building a high speed rail line to connect BR and NOLA?
What could possibly be the point in connecting two cities when one of them in particular has such woeful support to get you where you need to go once you arrive and spread out all over the place? This is dumb... dumb dumb dumb...
It’s a complete and utter waste of money, and par for the course with the dreamers in this state who remain completely oblivious to the economic realities that plague the area.

What time do the trains stop running? I have a feeling they'll have a late night train solely for this purpose. At least on weekends and during events.

Just keep it the same, right?
Changing nothing really seems to be getting Louisiana ahead.

That's the Louisiana line of thinking. Add another lane!!!

I have no problem with change. Change must happen in life, and we must be flexible to accept it when it is a net benefit, but this does not benefit anyone. It’s ridiculous to consider for a state that can’t even operate in the black as it is, and who’s surface streets and interstates remain in horrific condition, and severely inadequate to serve the needs of the public as it stands.
The oxen are in the ditch and we’re talking about something a state with a strong infrastructure, economy, and government considers. We happen to be on the bottom of all those categories, and a high speed train is not going to fix that. The funding of it will only exacerbate our problems.
I’m not against a high speed rail. I’m just against a high speed rail here because we have much more critical issues we can’t even fund or fix as it is. You’re talking physics, and we are still stuck on business math.

Previous estimates have put the overall cost of the rail service, including improvements to bridges and crossings, at slightly more than $260 million.
no way it will cost that, i think they have the 2 and the 6 in the wrong spot.it will cost alot more than that. why not fix the BR traffic problem first?

If BR for example wasn’t one giant ever expanding suburb it might make more sense, but it is exactly that, and so unless and until we get our minds wrapped around higher density populated areas and central business districts and the like you’re spinning your wheels.
The interstates continue to be Main Street because of that suburbia we call a city, and nobody here seems to be the least bit interested in changing direction either, so it’s going to be one giant failure IMO, and one we cannot afford to gamble on with money we don’t have either.
Drive around this city on our interstates and surface streets and try to imagine how long it’s been in disrepair, and then try and imagine a high speed rail that has to be funded and maintained that doesn’t take care of itself and then try and imagine how much worse the condition of those roadways will be in the future as a result.

All of this. You also have to consider a lot of business uses. I have to go down to New Orleans at least once every couple of weeks and I would absolutely use this every time. Even though the public transit sucks anybody going into the CBD would be a short Uber ride away from where they're going. And you can work/make calls the entire time.
This also takes some of the stress off of the interstates that are in horrific condition, as you say. I don't know if it would be enough to make a meaningful impact but it would certainly help. Reducing the number of cars on the road is always a good thing for safety as well.

Everything we have done with our school system since the 70s have helped to cause surburban flight.
Think about it.
Judge forces cross town busing thus more cross town traffic from busses and car pools.
Folks leave the parish for neighborhood schools in neighboring systems, but the parents still work in BR and drive to work.
Folks that remain in the parish but send their kids to private schools in and outside of theif neighborhoods. More busses and more carpools thus more traffic.
Magnet and Gifted schools also shuttle parents and kids across town. Again more traffic.
We are our own worst enemy.

My point was what are you going to do when you’re piss drunk getting off the train in Baton Rouge? That’s another uber ride......
Let’s play with numbers:
$20 uber ride to the station
$10 train fare (no clue what it will cost)
$20 uber ride to destination in New Orleans
$20 uber ride back home
How many people will use it consistently at that cost?
Posted on 6/20/18 at 1:19 pm to TJG210
$30 tank of gas
$20 park.
You've spent nearly, but not quite, the same amount.
The Uber ride to and from the beginning and end are conditional. It's just as reasonable to drive there yourself and drive home yourself. The train is not ONLY for drunks.
