Now that the BP checks are coming in I can't believe they paying people that much money ey for absolutely nothing.
Look if you deserved it and it actually affects ting your life I understand, but to go file a false claim and get paid 40k. I just don't get both sides

word....they have shrimpers in Acadiana wishing that the oil would spew again so that they could retire.
I know an old baw in Rayne that fished shrimp on the side and ran an auto body shop as his main business.....after his settlement on his side business he sold his body shop and built a big house in the country and basically spends his days fishing.
Things could be worse....but yea the oil spill was the worst thing to ever happen to shrimpers

No one is mad at capitalism, we're mad that uncapped damages and lawyers taking advantage of a catastrophe make it very expensive to do business in this state and country. For every lawyer that makes 8 million dollars off of a fat lawsuit payment there are dozens of other people who don't have good jobs (or don't have jobs at all) because companies are investing their money in less litigious locales.
Anyone who got unfair settlements from this (or any other lawsuit) are making bank at the expense of everyone else in the state. It's like when your neighbor defrauds the insurance company for bogus hail damage and wants you to be cool with it. All the while your premiums are artificially inflated to pay for his new roof.

Blame the BP lawyers who drafted the settlement, or the board of directors who approved it. This state isn't any more litigious than our neighbors. Corporations move to Texas because they bend over backwards to reduce or eliminate corporate taxes - they can afford this due to property taxes which are passed on to their individual employees.

all I took from this is how grossly overpaid lawyers are
It looks bad in this case but remember that the plaintiff attorneys in the FEMA litigation barely walked away with anything. Some even lost their practices because of it. These cases are a gamble. Sometimes you hit the jackpot; sometimes you bust.

Should there have been no law suits at all? Everyone is principled about litigation until they have been wronged. Then they get on the OT and ask for the best lawyer.

This x100. Class actions can completely consume a firm and destroy should the case not pay out. In the end BP agreed to the settlement and it isn't like they got hometowned in CDC. It isnt like these guys just showed up to court one time.
