Sounds like an inappropriate theme for a party.

The only thing you can do is hire a stripper.

A men's rite of passage ceremony sounds pretty cool to me.

I wish I had taken a year to live and work within the real world before having to endure 4 or more years of the indoctrination centers.

This is what I did. They were in the 11th grade. Took six of them to the camp and ran lines and frogged. Although a few of them got in the vodka, it was awesome. All those boys still come around these days every now and then and they are 24 years old.

"4 or more"?

If you had actually gone to college you should know exactly how many years of "indoctrination" you had.

That's actually a very good skill for a father to teach his kids. I let my kids drink at home and have talked to them about how to drink many times.

My wife taught my daughters how to tie the cherry stem without using their hands.

I wouldn't say I had become indoctrinated, but college certainly delayed real adult growth.

I changed the sentence from "I don't see anything wrong with taking a year off to live and work..." to "I wish I had taken a year off to live and work...".

I probably should have adjusted that part, too. I'm tired after cutting grass in 100 degree weather. Sue me.

Men come of age around 26/27 these days if they ever do. Hen X is the last generation that had a traditional age 18-20 manhood date.

Buy that baw a quality knife and a tell him that Disney Prince BS is not in his best interest and what you know about the nature of men and woman. It’s a jungle out there for that generation.

It’s a crock of shite but if being financed by the parents it’s 100% their failure as a parent

Most of the folks I see who have kids taking a gap year are either traveling (often funded by parents as a graduation present) or are participating in a service program like Habitat for Humanity.

I don’t see anything wrong with that.

men's rite of passage

Used to be a part of many different cultures all around the world. Was to let them know they are now men. No more freebies, or fricking off, get to work & be a man.

Much better than what we have now, guys extending their adolescence into their 30’s and 40’s.

Fair enough. I worked outside for about an hour and decided that it's ok if all the landscaping dies off this summer.

I can guarantee you that the kid doesn’t want to go to this party, and is trying to hide that it’s happening from all of his friends.

coming of age party for his son who is 17. Apparently it's going to be men only and he asked that I get a gift that is relevant to a young man venturing out into the world (I think he may take a gap year then pursue college).

Having a party seems for this just seems weird. If you want to do something for the boy take them hunting or fishing. Or go build something together. Having a party exchaning gifts sounds like some female shite. Go kill something with your bare hands and drink some bourbon afterwards.
