Mayor Mitch Landrieu’s long-term plan for increasing security in New Orleans will include a crackdown on “the culture of lawlessness” along Bourbon Street, with a goal of making the city's most notorious street resemble the more sedate environs of Royal Street, officials said Monday night as they addressed a crowd seeking more information about the plan..

The proposal for the famously freewheeling French Quarter stretch of strip clubs and loud music venues calls for efforts to eliminate vendors who sell booze to patrons from buildings' windows, clean the street and focus on code and business violations.

The final touch, once city officials have erected bollards blocking off vehicles from several blocks of Bourbon, would involve adding trees, planters, benches and other furniture to the roadway.

Everything else aside, what damn idiot thinks it is a good idea to put trees, benches, planters and other obstructions in the street? Have these people never been on Bourbon when it is wall to wall people? Just what they need is to obstruct the flow of thousands of drunk idiots stumbling down the road. How long before the first lawsuit from someone tripping over or being crushed against one of those? And RIP the Big arse Beer vendor window. Mitch is such a moron.

It's a good idea in general. I think selling booze from windows is fine though, no need to remove it..you might as well remove drive thru daiquiri shops then.

Can't wait for Mitch to be gone

As someone who has lived and worked in the quarter for over a decade the dude is clueless.

There was an article yesterday about how the city already removed the ones installed for Mardi gras

Sounds like Mitch is trying to reshape New Orleans into his own image, old and boring.

all they have to do is deploy like 10 of these

with tasers and pepper spray...... have them on an automated path up and down burbon. when something goes awry someone takes over at the CC and deploys ordinances.

Instead of paying money for vehicle blockades, he should just put the removed statues at either end.

And to change the culture let's just put up a no thugs allowed sign.

It might have a nicer feel to it, but it will do zero to tackle the stated problem they are trying to solve. That's what makes it a stupid, ill-conceived plan. Par for the course for Mitch.

The quarter has been doing a lot better. There are other part of the cities that need a good fix.

Just line the streets with job applications and blare David Allen Coe.
