Boss is retiring - don't want her job

She doesn't make that much for the bs we deal with. People throw our area under the bus constantly, and it would all around just be a very stressful position. Don't really want to provide any more detail than that, but suffice it to say my boss's boss and senior management/whomever pretty much expect me to apply for the position when it's posted soon.
They want the hire to train with her until she retires in May and take over the area.
What do I do here? Serious answers only please. I have to be prepared for them to wonder why I didn't apply when the position closes, but even still the rest of my days here for the foreseeable future would be even more miserable most likely, but to me not as miserable as taking a promotion I don't want right now in my life.

You're gonna hit it, right?

I've been in this same position before. 5x the stress for a 15-20% raise. I'm good

Tell them you don’t want the job, continue living your life like a man.

How prestigious is the title? If you are still young, take the gig for a bit to get a nice title on your resume and then jump to something better.
But if you can jump to something better now, take that option

How is she with touchscreen gaming?

So ask for an amount you feel comfortable with taking the position. What she makes doesn’t mean shite to you. You’re obviously experienced and able to keep the train rolling, if they want new blood that’s fine they can hire someone else for it and miss out on what you may bring.
This all assumes the unlikely though that you’re actually worth what you think you are and can’t be replaced that easily, so have a serious self reflection session and figure out whether that’s true or not

If you know you will get the promotion if you apply for it, take it and then start looking for another job. No point in turning down extra money if you are just going to be miserable either way.

well lets put it this way. Do you plan on staying in your current position even if you do not apply because guess what you are now going to be doing her position once she retires on top of training someone on how to do that position who will be making more money than you. It is going to be miserable either way so you might as well take the bump in compensation. I am in the same boat currently and looking for other opportunities but the salary bump from my current position is making it more palatable in the interim.

If you don't want the job, don't apply for it. The only reason you have to give anyone is that you like where you are and what you're doing.
If it gets too miserable, then you'll just have to find a new job.

Enjoy your cubicle life. You will never get another promotion opportunity

Apply, demand compensation great enough that it makes it worth it. Either you get paid or they hire someone else.
