I have the Bose QC35, and yes they are everything they are cracked up to be. I'm not an audiophile by any stretch, so I wont speak as to the sound quality, but for flat out noise cancellation, its a gamechanger
In the last few years, by all accounts, Sony's flagship headphones have surpassed the Bose, for roughly the same price. The same tech blogs that I trust also say the Senheisser come in a sold third behind Sony and Bose

I'm interested in the Bose SoundWear Companion:
You can clearly hear your music but you also aren't isolated from the world around you. May not be applicable for a new baby if she is trying to listen while the kid sleeps.

I have the Bose QC35's. They're awesome, noise canceling works great and the battery lasts for hours. My only criticism is connecting to things with bluetooth can be annoying at times. All in all, you can't go wrong with those if you're looking for headphones.

I have the QC 25s and have used them when I fly for years. They work great for cancelling out engine noise, but because it cancels out that noise, I can hear other peoples' conversations and screaming babies quite well. So while you're thinking that noise cancelling headphones will help you or your wife sleep through a screaming child, the noise cancelling feature actually works against that. It's not designed to drown out that type of noise. The sound quality is okay, but you may find that you can actually ignore the screaming child better if you don't turn on the noise cancellation. Just my two cents...

I've got some 599s. Acoustic quality is off the charts.

Your description of the noise cancellation is spot-on. I've used mine to talk on the phone while I mowed the lawn. I was amazed that the person on the other end could hear me speaking and while they could hear the lawn mower it somehow didn't interfere with my voice.

I got a pair free when I bought my computer. The Bluetooth has unbelievable range and the battery life is superb. Sound quality is decent.

I the new Sonys and they are far superior than Bose in noise cancelling and sound per my own test.
The noise cancelling technology in the Sony is probably the most impressive piece of technology I've come across in 2018.
I use them for work travel and to drown out coffee shops when I'm working remote.

i just got the Bose ones that have a wire. much cheaper and i dont ever plan on using them in a situation where the cord will get in the way. Sound quality is great
Get the AirMod wireless bluetooth adapter. It is a great way to convert the wired headphones into wireless.

I love my Sennheiser set.
Bose is really good as well.
But if you just had a newborn do you really want your wife to not be able to hear the baby?

Ive tried them all that are at that price point. Had a long layover one day and decided to get a pair after testing all the different ones out, and I got the Sony version. Sounds are great, and it has an app as well to adjust it to any settings you like. It has a pressure setting so you can adjust the pressure on your ears as you ascend and descend. Battery lasts FOREVER. Really easy usability.
The only con I've found with them is its inability to take calls on the device. You can take them, but I've had lots of complaints. This is a very menial complaint, and I would still buy the same set if I were to purchase today.
ETA Link: AMAAZON

Ive got the Bose Soundsport Free wireless headphones.
I love them.
Now, would I pay $200 for them? Nah.
But I know a guy that works at a liquidation place and he got me some for $20.
Very nice sound quality.
Can't hear shite if you have both pods in.
I often just use one.
Works great for phone conversations.
Looks kinda funny cause you've got a lot of components in a little circle sticking out of your ear.
Impressive Bluetooth range of 100-150 feet.
Buds charge in case.
Can get three charges before case needs charging.
Very secure in ear.
Water resistant.

The problem with the Sonys is that you can't just switch between multiple BT devices like you can with the Bose. You have to re-pair, which is a PITA when the source's pairing option is buried in a menu system (e.g. Apple TV) or the source is physically hard to get to. This is the third iteration of these cans, and they still haven't addressed it.

Just got the Bose QC 35 series 2 and they are badass. It works with Alexa and all my music runs through Amazon music. It's really nice to put them on, push a button, and say shuffle my music. Works pretty flawlessly with great sound quality.

Noise canceling headphones with a newborn seems like not a good idea. Safety wise
Seems fine to me as the noise canceling deals with white noise such as a/c units, engine noise, etc..... Voice and particularly baby crying would still be audible provided the volume isn't super loud. Which would be an issue with any headphones.

You are correct about this. I didnt think about it when typing my reply earlier. Definitely a frustrating attribute.
