I never realized outside of Southern Louisiana that people arent really diehard card players until I moved. Do people play cards in yankee Louisiana like they do NOLA area?

That's half the fun. Don't bourre and make DAMNED sure you always play to win, lest you match the pot.

it sounds like a jazzed up a bit Crazy eights? Eights are the trump card to change the suit and you play in suite or a number can play on another number to change the trump?

Like riding a bike.

When the teachers went on strike in Houma in 90-91 my mom made my brother and I go to school so she didn't have to feed us. Our substitute teacher (a parent) taught the class how to play Pedro and Bourre. I already knew since my parents had card games twice a month and that's what they played.

It's pretty common on the MS Gulf Coast, I learned how to play it before poker.

No numbers. Just suite. If hearts is played and clubs is the trump, you have to play hearts, and you have to beat it if you holding a higher card. If you dont have hearts you must play club if you have it.

No, way closer to hearts or spades. It's a five card hand trick taking game (5 tricks per round). Dealer's last card sets the trump for that hand. You must always play to win. For instance, if someone plays the three of trump and you have the deuce of trump and the ace, you must play the ace instead of trying to play the deuce and save the ace for a later trick. If another player catches you not playing to win, you've reneged and you have to double the pot. If you don't take a single trick out of the five, you bourre and have to double the pot.

Whoever has the most tricks at the end of the hand takes the pot.

Do you play dealer antes only per game or each player antes per game? We put a limit on the bourre amount / dealer ante ($2~5) in the family game. Even then, you'll get pots 10-12x that amount as they roll over. Pot match can get big quick.

Must be ballers playing like that. We never played double the pot. For example if the hand is $5, bourre is $10. Reneg and its also $10. Double the pot is high stakes lol.

Person to left leads out

Correct, unless no Trump card is played. For instance spades is Trump. I lead ace of hearts, and everyone has a heart I win the round.

You can win the pot if you have 2 books and 3 others have 1

Correct, unless you have a Trump then you have to play the Trump

Coreect. Other ways to Bourre = not playing a cinch. For instance in the first example. I lead off ace of hearts and when the book. If I have Ace of spades and king of spades I have to play them ace then king. Because those are the absolute highest cards and I would win the round with 3 books, you don't play ace king, you Bourre

2-2-1 pot carries

Not everyone plays match pot. We typically play double or triple ante. So if we playing quarter a round. Then it would be 50 or 75 cents if you bourre. We always do a $10 roll.of quarters and play till you run out of money. Keeps things interesting but you don't lose to much.

I've played it all my life.

It's kind of hard to play with novices because they "technically renege" so often. When you point it out them they just can't understand why you have to play your cards in a certain way and why you must try to bourre as many other players as possible.

Bourre is one of those games that nobody would ever teach me when i'd see people playing b/c they were worried i'd become too good at it

i've thought about learning gin rummy. i think you can find good games online (when i was learning spades, there was shite and shite online)

my #1 favorite card game of all time (other than NL HE) is guts, though, at least the version we played in college. it's so simple and a real game of psychology

Doubling the pot is the standard rule. When playing with family we set the limit at $10 or $15.

Folks were definitely playing bourre in north LA in the 70s and 80s.

You don't seem to hear as much about it since the boats arrived and the big poker craze of the last several years.
