re: Boomers are destroying the Boy Scouts

the older boomers were in their 30s in the late 70s and early 80s. That's a pretty typical age for a scout leader. Now maybe the younger end of the boomers weren't involved, but the older end most certainly were.
Like I said, some of the Boomers would have been scouts, and a lot of others young parents. But your typical molester doesn't seem to me at least to be a young guy with a kid of his own. It's usually (and you didn't cite a source, so I'll speak anecdotally as well) more middle-aged loner types.
I did give an example: Mr. Wonder, a member of the "Silent" generation. There's also a guy somewhere near where I live, in Cobb County I think, who's older still and was perhaps the most prolific Scouts molester in Georgia.
It just isn't a Boomer thing any moreso than any other generation. I'd even argue they're less guilty than those that came before them.

I wasn't in band or scouts. Both seem kind of queer

There he goes again with the homosexual references.

It sure seems like a lot of the news reports, to the extend the perp has been named, in a lot of cases, the perp was in their 20s - 30s.
Now, when it comes to pedo priests, I agree with you that those seemed to be older men.

Ouch. Sick burn. Maybe next time you can actually contribute to the conversation.

One, landscaping/grounds clean up at a home/development center where mentally deficient/handicapped adults lived. It was a mixed bag. Some could have part-time jobs...some could not.
The other was painting/repair/landscaping/cemetery clean up at a small church full of older members.

As the dad of two eagle scouts, I will trust your judgment on it

There's also a leadership development, and learning to work with others, dynamic that dad can't teach on a hunting trip.
I took my son on a scout camping trip recently; he's only in tiger cubs. He hunts, fishes, and does general woodsman type stuff with me regularly, but it was still pretty fun. I will say though that the high school level scouts there were not the type to become astronauts, senators, and titans of industry. They seemed very much like the type that play DoD and get shoved into lockers when not scouting. Very nice young men but nerds to the max. I'm sterotyping those kids but I imagine that perception leads to more than a few withdrawals.
It's definitely not your daddy's scouts from the 50s and 60s.

And again, your comrades were diddling boys. Not girls. Boys.
Why is this relevant? Is it somehow less reprehensible for a man in a position of power to diddle prepubescent girls?

learning to work with others
I'll be damned. A father can- and must- be the cornerstone of this teaching for his sons (and daughters)- the cornerstone; not a failed organization. And you don't need the "countryside" to achieve this.
However,
quote:
can't teach on a hunting trip.
quote:
learning to work with others
Well now wait just a damned minute, learning to work with others is the absolute antithesis of what a man, young or old, actually learns while preying on wild animals in the wild places that we originate from: he learns to work within himself, and from there the rest (i.e., working with others) will more readily grow and flourish in the way he can best contribute based on what he has learned about himself and his strengths and weaknesses.
No scoutmaster will ever teach a young boy about the magnitude of his actions like a responsible, introspective father who gives his son the power, resources, knowledge and opportunity to take the life of a living, breathing animal and then partake in feeding upon that animal's flesh thereafter and the reverence for which it must be done with.
Nothing develops leadership like learning to lead one's self, and no organization or badge comes close to that development like the primordial, ancient ceremony of one generation passing on to another the violent, natural and serene human act of becoming an apex predator- and one who is being taught by the apex predator from which they originated from.
I'm no scout hater, but I'm certainly more of a proponent of the raw power of fatherhood, no matter the topography, and of the unbridled development that arises from the act of 21st century humans feeding on prey that we kill- far more than any sash full of "merit" badges will ever achieve, certainly.
Fathers and hunting and the outdoors are just as vital a component to boys becoming men as the act of joining the scouts. All of the above were vital to the original conceptual foundation of which the boy scouts was built upon, but one is not like the others:The boy scouts needs fathers and sons and the outdoors lifestyle far more than they need the scouts.
Never downplay the importance and hierarchy of humans being humans over our ceremonial, organizational pastimes. Just sayin'.

Gotta read the whole thread. The poster I was responding to, was trying to argue that the real reason Scouts are struggling is because "they let in the gays". I was simply pointing out how ironic that statement was, considering the adult leaders were diddling boys.
Obviously it's just as bad, boys or girls.

Well said. I wasn't trying to imply that the bond between father and son, or what a son learns about himself while hunting with his dad, isn't very important. Of course it is.
At a certain level, it's also different than what the Scouts teaches.
At the base level, Scouts first teaches you about being a man, about independence, about being a good citizen, etc. Of course, a good father will teach his son many of these thing, as well.
But as you advance in the organization, it teaches you how to lead other boys, who are becoming men. The ability to lead 6-8 other young men in your patrol, and then later on, lead 20-30 other young men in your troop, is something that is hard to experience in other arenas. Unless the father has 6-8 boys all around the same age, that's not something the young man will learn just by hunting with dad.
The first set of ranks (Tenderfoot, Second Class, First Class) are all about learning to better oneself, achieving one's own potential, and being a responsible, secure person. The higher ranks (Star, Life, Eagle) are all about leading others to achieve their potential.
