I saw a guy on LA Sportsman selling his $60K toy hauler, $48K Dodge dually he used to pull it with, and his $12K Harley and he mentions need to sell ASAP due to being let go from the oil industry. Those are the people I don't feel sorry for. You can have $100K worth of shite you don't need but can't last a few months when laid off.

A year ago, Merlin Price Jr. was working as a safety engineer on an oil rig in south Texas. Like many in Morgan City, offshore work was all he knew; He'd been doing it for 35 years. "They called me on the phone and said 2 weeks when you go home; they said you're done," he told News 2's Natalia Verdina.

Wow..just wow. You do something like that for 35 years making great money and now you are living with your mom?
Jesus fricking christ..this is why people don't feel sorry.

Any of the above that worked in O&G that did not prepare for the downturn are as dumb as the trash.
Prepare for the downturn?
So, a 50 year old highly educated individual with 2 children, one who is in college and another in high school, who has plenty of savings is "prepared" to lose his job and his entire stream of income?
This man could have well over 6 figures in savings, all vehicles paid off, easily attainable mortgage and still be in a bind in the near future. He's not getting another job in that industry any time soon. So what, he has to sell his house to downsize and have a lower mortgage? Daughter in college has $7,000 in tuition due this August, no problem?
When half of the country lost their money in the stock market in 7-8 years ago I was laughing saying "you stupid frickers should have been ready for this!"

OP, cry me a river. You oilfield peeps made your bed, now lie in it. You made two to three times the money for people that do similar jobs in other fields and rubbed everyone's noses in it while it was good but you were too dumb to realize that you might need to save for a rainy day. Now is the time to taste your own medicine.
The above says it all. Many people on this site are celebrating the downturn purely because they are jealous of people making twice as much as them with no college education.

Well, he could have been laid off for a while, or he could be liquidating just to be safe
You can't be certain that he's dead broke

Medical is feeling it. You think people that lose their benefits are going to the doctor? They don't go until it's absolutely necessary.

Can still empathize with them for losing their job due to the down turn....spending like there is no tomorrow on dumb shite...that's a whole nother story

All these companies got greedy, hired unskilled workers, and coasted when the price went well above where it should have been. If the price wouldn't have skyrocketed in the first place, most of the people loosing their jobs never would have gotten it in the first place.
Ding Ding Ding. I know it's not the workers' faults..but they still have to go into this knowing this shite WILL happen at some point. It's the nature of the bitch.

What about those making twice as much as them with a college education/degree???

I do have empathy for the many who lose their jobs and struggle because of an economic dynamic that isn't really based on demand.. I dont understand the likes of the man quoted in the article who has worked for 35 years and immediately has to move in with his mother once he's laid off.. Proper planning would have this man retired not broke sleeping on mommies couch.

It will be costing every taxpaying family in LA. Higher taxes are coming.

It's the consumer's fault.
We're the ones paying for cheap gas. We could demand that it cost more.
But do we? No. We're the assholes.
