From what I've gathered, there are 2 philosophical issues that don't translate to Americans perfectly.
1. German maintenance intervals are not optional. If it says do x service at y miles, you do x service at y miles. There is no "pushing your luck"
2. Europeans and British people expect maintenance bills. We have grown accustomed to the new (pre-EV at least) era of insanely reliable autos. Euros? Not so much.
But that still doesn't excuse the electronics issues they all seem to have (especially English cars and Audis). Also their engines and systems are so complicated, as you described, that routine maintenance can be absurdly expensive.

I’ve had a couple, they have all been great vehicles to drive. I only had one past the warranty and I wouldn’t make that mistake again. I thought since it was paid for it would be fine fixing whatever went wrong, it cost me more that year than when I had been paying the note, and you can’t work on them yourself.

The strangest stuff breaks on a BMW that normally doesn’t break on other vehicles. They are fun to drive, but a BMW out of warranty is a scary thing.

I got one a couple years ago and had major regrets after reading what people said online and to me in person, but it’s been good to me so far. Maybe I’ve just been lucky. Quite an upgrade from my Hyundai Accent.

My advice is to only listen to people that have owned a BMW

Buy a low mileage used model

Have a buddy that was a big BMW guy.. He just got sick of every time he brought it in for maintenance it was 2 grand... So he went to Audi but he is quiet about the bills... He is also quiet about the bills for his Ferrari....

Depends on what you prefer, I guess. Lexus is more comfortable and drives more like a boat. BMW is much more responsive and you can turn on a dime. I prefer the latter.

We bought a BMW several years back and the sales guy was German. He drove at 1st on the test drive. That was one of the most exciting experiences of my life.

You just need something to get you from one place to the other.
If it’s at the top of the price range, don’t.
A base model vehicle will get you to and from work just as the same as full loaded ones

Bought my daughter a 2020 x1 for her graduation gift. 5 years later she ignored some rattling under the hood. Didnt wanna tell dad it was hadn’t an issue. I ride somewhere with her one day ask how long has your engine mount been out? Come to find out there are a lot of plastics parts under the hood that last just fine as long as the you don’t ignore an obvious vibration. After the second $2000 repair for a random part she now owns her first car she bought herself: A Mazda SUV. She loves both of them.

Don't buy one unless you have more money than brains

Why not buy the cheapest most reliable vehicle that fit your household and invest the rest?

Correct.
Toyoya/Lexus are much more reliable and I'd pick them 10/10 times over BMW/Merc/Audi, but if I was renting one it would be German for fun factor.
Outside of the LFA, of course

I've had a couple and currently drive an M550i. Amazing vehicles. You wont be disappointed. Previous Bimmer was a tuned stage 2 M5 that I drove to hell and it gave me no issues.
