To me African American seems more disingenuous/awkward. If I'm openly referred to as white, what's the issue?
That said I think that only applies to whites/blacks. You don't start referring to anyone else as colors because there's no history of that.

I would take a hint from the National Association for Advancement of Colored People. Hopefully answers your question.

Maybe ask for proof they are from Africa? They may as well be from New Guinea, Haiti, Dominican Republic, the Carribean, etc. Those people would be offended if you call them African American.

You can use black as an adjective. I.E. a black man, the black man, etc.
Do not use Black as a noun. The black, the blacks.
More specifically, African-American should only be used to denote someone who is a first generation immigrant.
I.e. Obama is an African-American (though his dad), but Michelle Obama is a Black Woman.
It's worked for me all the way up to the 5th without incident.

Yet you and your kind usually have no problem calling people descended from across the other ocean "Asian" or "Asian American. No racists here.
